30733 2002-01-11 04:31:00 help.....the computer wont recognise cds when I insert them....well sometimes. After many frustrating trys it occaisonally detects the cd but most often it just tells me that there is nothing there. running windows 98.
Any ideas please as this is getting frustrating....its on all cds too not just specific ones....and cds that have worked previously
Thanks

30734 2002-01-11 04:46:00 Could be on the blink, dipstick.

I had the same thing, tried different drivers, changed from primary to secondry, in the end the only way I could access a CD was to boot up with the CD in the drive.

Even then it didn't work every time.

How old is it?

30735 2002-01-11 06:32:00 Maybe its time for a head clean.

If you have had it a couple of years then it maybe pretty dusty in there..I think you can buy cleaning disks from the likes of Dick Smith.

Or you can do it the old fashion way and rip the top off and have a go yourself.

Either way a decent clean may be in order.

30736 2002-01-12 01:36:00 Sounds like the CD drive on my wife's PC.

It started that behaviour intermittently but now has stopped reading some disks at all, even new, unscratched ones. I'm going to replace it with a burner and bin the old one. I'm reliably informed that the laser is dying, so it's goodnight nurse. :-(
