| 30710 | 2002-01-11 00:28:00 | I have Win ME and am using the MS Backup to backup to my CD writer. Trouble is, message keeps telling me the media is write protected. I didn't know a CD could be 'write protected'. I checked the settings on the CD-Rom device, but it all seems normal. I also tried just copying a file to the D: (CD) Drive, but got the same result,Any suggestions? | Guest (0) | ||

You could open the Disc again for further writing using a burning program such as Nero or Direct CD but this is not always successful and if the data already on the CD is important not worth the risk. Try using a new CDR and format it with a burning program first. If it is a new CDRW it will probably need formatted before you can write to it. You cannot copy Data to your CD Rom it is 'read only' meaning you can read the info on the disc but you cannot write anything to it or alter it in any way. CD=Compact Disc. Rom=Read only memory. I have just read your post again and I am maybe a bit confused. Are you trying to copy files from a CD in the CDRom Drive to a CD in your CD writer using MS Backup? Or are you trying to backup files from your computer to a CD? If you are this will explain a lot. Please post back with exactly what it is you are trying to do. As Ian said MS Backup doesn't handle CDRW's very well and prefers to use Zip drives. There are a huge amount of backup programs around that far exceed MS Backups capabilities, and you would be better off using one of those. You should have got some sort of backup program with your CD writer. Depending on what it is you are trying to copy (backup) there may be protection on the CD to stop copying. This can be overcome but is another story altogether. Post back with exactly what you are trying to and someone can give you some more specific help. hand. |

| 30714 | 2002-01-13 22:05:00 | Thank you for your comments. To clarify, I was just following the instructions in MS Backup to backup my data fils onto a CDR. It is a new CDR so cannnot be full. Anyway, I checked that by opening it in Explorer and found that there was nothing written on it. When I select the D: drive for the backup, I get the respoinse that the CD is write protected. I am using a ATAPI CD-R/RW 8x4x32 CD Rom and assumed that I could write my backup files to that. Cheers R |
