31051 2002-01-13 09:43:00 Hi Doug, externals are a lot better for rural areas,as they are a full hardware modem as opposed to a software modem ,ie internal.Get Telecom to check your line first though,as it may be a bit stuffed,as many rural lines are.(noise from electric fences etc). Also if you are on, what is called a 0+2,or 1+1,(ask the Telecom people) then going to an external won't make any difference. If you are on an individual line and it is pretty clean according to Telecom, you could look at the Dynalink 56K Rural modem. These have been designed especially for this purpose.
Hope this is some help

31052 2002-01-13 11:01:00 Hi
Have you tried Telecom if it is posible to put a suppresser on your phone line. They did this for me and worked fine. Have you tried to slow your modem back to 33.6. I had to run my 56k modem at 33.6 to get a good download before the suppresser was installed. Go to the web site for your modem and get the command string to slow the modem and place this in Start, Settings, Control Panel, Modems,Properties Advanced and in Extra Settings. I used W2+MS=11 for a Dynalnk modem.

31053 2002-01-14 11:45:00 Dynalink NZ told me that all they do is transmit with a bit of extra grunt. I got the impression that they weren't worth the extra dosh.

I bought a US Robtics hardawre modem and it is awesome - it hardly misses a beat, even when my old Dynalink modem would have given up.

I know some folks in Ashburton who have the same sort of connection as you get from a 56k line (except they have a hardware modem). Telecom won't switch them to a business line (which'll give them a better connection). Another example of the Kiwi share agreement stabbing someone.
