31000 2002-01-13 02:35:00 I have a Computer Running a Pentium 3 1.0ghz processor, 384mb of pc-133 sdram with 2 seagate 5400rpm ATA-100 hard drives. The benchmarks i have run indicate that my hard drive(s) are my bottleneck. I am running Windows 2000 Pro.

How (if i can at all) can I set up one of those RAID arrays that are so popular nowadays?. and is it worth it seeing my hard drives are only 5400prm.

Thanks in advance

31001 2002-01-13 04:49:00 I don't know a lot about this subject, but this is what I do know:

? If your motherboard supports RAID, you can do it almost right away.

? If your motherboard doesn't support RAID you can purchase a RAID PCI card from Dick Smith.

? I think the two hard drives might have to be the exact same model, but I'm not sure.

? There are two ways of setting up RAID, Mirroring (forgive spelling), and Striping (forgive spelling again). The first is where if one of the disks fails, the other is a copy, so your data is intact. The later is set up such that half the information is put on one drive, and half the information is on the other drive, and they both act as one drice, allowing twice the access speed, and twice the storage.

Hope this helps, and hope some one with a bit more knowlenge that me will explain a little better that I have.

Cya,

David

31002 2002-01-13 10:26:00 Wow!!

I had no idea that RAID gave such a massive boost to performance, I knew RAID was fast, but what you say sounds correct, and just imagine having two (I believe it is possible to have more than two, some servers have up to eight!) say, 7200rpm drives accessing at the same time, that's the equivalent of a 14,400rpm drive....nice!

I think I'll rig my PC up with this, does someone here know the finer points, like do the drives need to be identical etc...

Thx
