30874 2002-01-12 04:12:00 I have a kernel32.exe virus which is unrepairable and which has been quarantined. Can I safely leave it in quarantine forever or should I delete it from the system?
Why I ask is because if I press 'delete' I get a warning ask me whether I really want to permamently delete this file !!This implies that although infected and quarantined, it is still serving a function within the system. Is this so ?

30875 2002-01-12 05:04:00 It's Always Better To Be Safe Than Sorry If The Quarantine Area Is Well Away From C:\WINDOWS(Or Where Windows Is Installed And You Are Not Using It Leave It There Or You Could Send It To The Recycle Bin For A Month Or So To Make Sure Windows Is Still Working. Guest (0)
30876 2002-01-12 06:40:00 I think you'll probably get that message because kernel32.exe is a system file, so Windows will automatically ask if you are sure you want to delete it even if its not in use.

Kernel32.exe is regularly used by Windows, so you may need to locate it on your Windows CD and install a new copy after you've removed the old one.

30877 2002-01-12 06:40:00 You could also try and go to the norton site www.symantec.com and look up the virus which should give you full info on what exactly the virus affects and how to remove it safely without affecting your machine....they might even have a virus removal tool there for it which does a better job then just the AV itself Guest (0)
30878 2002-01-12 08:37:00 Hello Bryan,

Kernel32.exe is quarantined by Norton AV when it detects the badtrans virus or one of it's variants this file is not to be confused with Kernel32.dll which is a very important system file which should not be played around with.
To get rid of Kernel32.exe start your PC in safe mode and go to NAV quarantine, you will now be able to delete it safely, ignore the warning messages as the only programme that used this file was the badtrans virus, you can't delete this file in normal mode.
