2002-01-14 20:21:00 | Is it just me or is Win Me a real dog. I got a new computer about six months ago loaded with Me and I continue to have real problems with start ups and shut downs. The computer can freeze up while starting up or will just crash with an error on shuting down. I don't want to go to XP and I doubt if I can downgrade to Win 98. Any ideas. | Guest (0) | |

2002-01-14 21:19:00 | Thanks Bob I'm running a PIV 2GHZ 256 ram so I believe its got plenty of get up and go. I might try and reinstall Me and see if that helps

2002-01-14 23:30:00 | I'm running ME and have been for the last 4 months. It only seems to like clean installs for some reason..ie over a reformatted Hard Drive. If you just reinstall it over top of your old OS then you will have no end of problems....it even did it to me when I reinstalled over top of ME...I suggest give it a clean install and if you have norton utilities then to leave it off....this played with my ME so much I had to reinstall to get things running again.m Otherwise my ME has run fine and is actually quite a good OS. Also with ME enable automatic updates...this helps a hell of a lot too. | Guest (0) | |

Its full of experimental stuff that was being tested to see if they could get a DOS based OS to do the sort of crap XP can and it was an abject failure. Basically I destroy every copy of ME I see (don,t leave the disk lying around if I am in your house). You cannot take it backwards to 98SE and the last thing I would do is try to upgrade it to XP or 2000. My suggestion is get 2000 (full version) and do a clean install of that but if you do not want to have to learn how to use it then get a copy of 98SE and clean install that. You will find that there are full version copies of 2000 and 98SE for sale regularly in auction at www.trademe.co.nz |

2002-01-15 00:50:00 | I'm kind of surprised to see people recommending 98SE. I have original 98 at home and 98SE at work. I used to have original 98 at work (a year ago). My experience is that SE is as much of a dog as ME sounds. Check any bulletin board and you'll find complaints about SE outnumbering FE (first edition) by 2 to 1. At any rate, if you install SE you won't be done with shutdown errors - no one at my office can reliably shut down despite applying all the recommended fixes.

2002-01-15 06:39:00 | I tend to recommend 98SE to people because its still really DOS and as most users are used to DOS via Windows dominence of the market for some time now I feel the average user will find it easier to learn to use and modify to their particular requirements. Personally though I moved to 2000 about 8 months ago and although I virtually had to relearn how to tweak the OS and modify it I am never going back to a DOS based OS ever except as required to play some of my older games properly. I still dual-boot but hope to eventually drop 98SE completely. Your right that SE has its share of problems but they are nowhere near as bad as ME and at least with SE you can actually do something about them with relative ease which unfortunately is not so at all with ME IMHO. Practically every tweak for an SE system is widely available to the user on the net and I believe that with this resource 98SE is a good choice for the bulk of average users with their wide variety of requirements from their systems. The future however is NT/XP/.net based (Linux is not ready for the mass market yet) and as such all users should be looking at least to installing 2000 if not XP fairly soon although I dislike the automation in XP a great deal myself and will stick with 2000 for as long as there is proper support from MS and hardware and software companies.

2002-01-15 08:53:00 | Hi AJ. Bought Athlon 1.1, 128mb, WinMe in April. Been bloody marvellous. Put another 128mb in about 2 months ago only because it was so cheap. Didnt really need it. There have been quite a few postings about this over the last month, and dipstick 01 sums them all up in one posting. Forget the other dipsticks. Get Me working right and you will never go back. Its worth perservering with it. Cheers.

2002-01-15 09:12:00 | Hi AJ, If you intend to change your OS, consider Windows 2000 Pro and do a clean installation. It is very stable and I have been using it for about a year without problems. It is sweet! Good Luck BK
