31178 2002-01-14 10:13:00 I am looking to buy a new CPU and motherboard for my computer. I am looking at 900mhz CPU's. I see that a Celeron 900 and AMD Duron 900 are priced nearly the same. Is one of these CPU's more preferrable than the other?
I would love to hear your view.
Cheers

31179 2002-01-14 10:38:00 Different people will have different views depending on their experiences, but I would prefer the AMD Duron 900, not only because I have one, but also because it has a 100MHz bus speed against 66MHz for the Celeron.
I think you get better performance for your money with the Duron.

31180 2002-01-14 10:56:00 I am not a fan of AMD but I also think the Duron is by far the best value.

To be honest, I very much doubt that you'll find anything that'll be slow on a processor of the calibre anyway (as long as you don't skimp on the RAM and don't bloat it down with XP).

31181 2002-01-14 11:24:00 I think you will find very little difference between the two in everyday applications. Pay little attention to performance benchmarks as a lot focus on one or two tests, not tuely reflecting the overall performance of a processor.

As for specs the celerons run 100mhz FSB from the 800 upwards with 128k L2 cache on the 800~1.1ghz celerons and 256k L2 cache on anything above that.

31182 2002-01-14 20:20:00 Oops.. thats right about the Celeron 100MHz FSB, thanks Tazzie.

Perhaps another thing to consider is that a m/b for a Duron will also support Athlon
cpu.
