31159 2002-01-14 06:08:00 Thanx 4 your answers. I got telecom to check the lines and they(the lines )were pcmc which they changed to DTLN. this has upped the bytes to 31200bps. I am unsure now whether to proceed with a rural modem, or whether to bother setting the modem on 33.6. What do you think? Thanx Doug Guest (0)
31160 2002-01-14 08:56:00 Doug,

1+1 0+2's, PCM's & DTLM are all forms of line spliters. Ie 1 physical line into a couple.

End of the day these work similar to how a modem works. Modualte and de-modulate the traffic over the cables. End of the day due to this and bandwith that this speed is limited to approx 28.8-33.6k

If your getting 31200 this is pretty good, changing modems will not speed your connection. Jess

31161 2002-01-14 10:32:00 Hi Doug

I also live in a rural area and get fraustrated with download speeds.

On my parents machine with an internal 56k modem running a pentium 200 they get 38kbps all the time.

With my machine wich is an AMD 1600+ using a Dynalink 56k external voice modem which isn't the rural modem I sit on nicely at 45kbps and that is same ISP (just using there connection).

So wot i'm getting at is that yes a external modem is better.

I also tried those codes to slow down my parents connection to make it more reliable but i think they are a load of crape and make no difference.

If you are on a dairy farm maybe this new satelaite connection that Fonterra (milk company) want to bring out could be wot u are looking for. It's been in the papers and on TV3 news 2nite. (interviewed my Dad for that) if you want more info.

Just thought i would give u a comparasion.
