| 31412 | 2002-01-16 02:30:00 | I have narrowed my box only upgrade choices down to two variations:(1)Motherboard with KT266a chipset,AthlonXP 1600+, with 512 DDR ram. (2) Motherboard with KT133A chipset, Athlon 1200 and 512 PC133 SDRam. It's about a $400.00 difference, and I wonder how many years the faster upgrade may buy?. In both options I have chosen an ATA100 7200 rpm hd, so that should'nt be an issue? Shall I save the 400.00 for other bits and pieces? Any opinions welcome |

As far as CPU speeds go, the faster cpu won't make much difference as it is essentially a slower cpu (the1600+ is AMD'S new labelling method which indicates that with their faster transfer tecnology the cpu performs like an equivalent 1600 cpu) and for most apps there will be little or no noticeable difference. However a motherboard which supports the much faster ddr ram rather than the slower sdr ram is definitely a plus. It will allow for more upgrade scope in later years. Definitely go with that mother board, even if you put a cheaper cpu in it. G P |
