31342 2002-01-15 10:40:00 Hi PC world & Readers
Last October I bought my 1st PC,a 2nd hand Athlon 500.On my 2nd attempt to write a full disc backup to CDRW,the system froze & after resetting I got a 'Sec Master drive ATAPI incompatible -press F1 to resume' message. The CDRW no longer worked & was missing from the system.Since then the problem has gone from starting fine but crashing with the 'ATAPI'message upon resetting, To having to press F1 every time I start.I first posted this problem back on Dec.2nd and my thanks to those people that were kind enough to respond.I have tried the suggestions of checking he jumpers & downloading critical updates but without success.I thought I had nailed the problem when I recently replaced the IDE cable & the CDRW came back to life & seemed to work OK apart from failing a Norton CD Test. But at the next session the dreaded 'ATAPI' message had returned & not only was the CDRW not working but now the DVD player was missing from the system. The DVD will reappear if I restart the system but never the CDRW.Is there any way of telling if the problem is a faulty CDRW, hardware or the software? I recently found a similar problem on a PC help site that was fixed by changing the BIOS to Auto from CD rom. Is this something that is,likely to work, easy to do & more impotantly reverseable if unsuccesful? I would appreciate any help whatsoever as it has now been 3 months that I have been trying to fix this problem.
Cheers

Just a suggestion.

On post boot, go into bios, change secondry master to auto, also make sure jumper on CDRW is set to slave.

Come back, if unsure how to do this.

31345 2002-01-16 08:59:00 Hi Scotty. I did treble check all the connections when I replaced the IDE cable, so Im fairly sure the cable & connections are OK.Unfortunately I dont have access to another computer or the cash for a new CDRW at the moment, But thanks for the suggestions.
Cheers
