31327 2002-01-15 09:49:00 I'm ending up with bad sectors and the win386.swp tends to be the culprit. It happens on shutdown when I drop the final browser window and disconnect to the server,or this is my guess. What can I do to remedy this and also can I get the sectors back in use? Guest (0)
31328 2002-01-15 10:36:00 Hi Tiger,

I'm afraid it's a good bet your hard disk drive is failing. That's why you are getting bad sectors, and they can't be recovered. At least I think that is the problem you're having. Try running Scandisk with the 'Thorough' option selected so it can do a cluster by cluster check for bad sectors. It might take quite a while for a large drive. If it finds many bad sectors you'd better think about replacing the drive pretty soon. Scandisk will mark the sectors as bad and so those sectors will not be available for use, which is necessary to avoid the kind of errors you've been getting. My guess is your drive might be getting quite full too. Is it?

Cheers,
Rod.

31329 2002-01-15 10:47:00 What gives you the idea that you have bad sectors? Is there some message that tells you the HD has them?

Bad sectore are a hardware issue, where the operating system is unable to access portions of the hard drive due to physical errors on the disc surface.

These errors are usually caused by the drive's read/write heads making contact with the disc surface as a result of problems with the drive's mechanics. It is not a software issue.

Are you certain that the reports indicate bad sectors? The only remedy is for a program like Scandisk (Or Spinrite) to thoroughly check the surface of the disk for these and other errors and mark them as 'bad' to prevent the OS from attemping to use them. They cannot be returned to use.

My guess, however, is that the drive is past its use-by date.

31330 2002-01-16 02:58:00 Thankyou Chaps,Nice to KNOW that its a hardware issue and I can see the point that its a malfunction of a mechanical variety as the bad clusters are all in the same area.A new computer is top of the list as this was just a first learning one to make mistakes on and many have said its rather amazing its lasted as long as it has! Thanks Guest (0)
