31550 2002-01-17 04:20:00 An offensive website has somehow commandeered itself into becoming my homepage, search and search settings page in Internet Explorer 6. I don?t know how it got there, or for that matter how to get rid of it. I have tried changing my homepage back to Hotmail and resetting the IE6 web settings, but whenever I reboot my computer, the site reappears. Does anyone know of any ways to resolve the matter? 31551 2002-01-17 04:29:00 Goto windows update and download all the security patches.

There are a heap of security hole in IE that let sites do this so I would recomend you check regularly (or consider using a more secure browser).

31552 2002-01-17 06:26:00 Could be one of those nasty little programs that some unscrupulous websites insist on installing onto your system (with the aid of ActiveX which is running in your browser).

Have a look in your startup folder for any programs you don't recognise, and using msconfig (Start/Run, type msconfig) turn the suspicious program(s) off. If that fixes the problem, uninstall the nasty little beggar using Settings/Control Panel/Add Remove Software, or if it hasn't listed there, do a 'Find' and right-click/Delete from there.

To prevent this happening in the future, change the permissions in ie6 so that ActiveX (and Java) have to ask before they run the fun little scripts on the sites you visit. You can always say yes if you reeeeally want to...

It can be a bit of a pain having these 'can I run this?' dialogs popping up everytime you open a page, but unless you want Java and say flash/shockwave disabled totally, it's a better bet than turning the scripts off altogether.

But maybe some of the other folk here have a better solution.

31553 2002-01-18 00:44:00 Yes, good advise Andy.

I use ZoneAlarm to do the same thing when I want to have a quiet time, and don't want all my ICQ/Yahoo/MSN buddies to message me!

Regards, ALAN ;-)

31554 2002-01-19 07:23:00 ...should none of the above correct your annoyance you may need a small Registry hack.

If so - the following might be of interest:
