31546 2002-01-17 03:57:00 Hi All, I've been thinking and yes the wife has warned me about thinking too much but I have had a few ideas and I'd be interested in your opinions. The main problems that seem to be occuring at the moment..ie multiple posts/undecipherable questions and lack of information could be easily solved by a log in system.
picture this. You type in pressF1 for the first time and you arrive at a fairly standard log in screen...name, email address and password but there is also a series of pages you go through...short and sweet with various tips on how to post effectivly....ie...click the bloody button ONCE only...lol anyway...this means that you log in to actually enter the site thus preventing people using another name as has happened to billy t to answer or abuse a post. It would also eliminate the need for the question when replying/making a post which can then be replaced with one essential question....what OS are you using??
Another innovation that could be added is a google search bar at the top and a postings search facility as well....I know that is already there but perhaps it could be a little more obvious??
Any other ideas??....remember they need to be cheap or free to add or implement.

31547 2002-01-17 04:44:00 Hi All

I put my suggestions up when I did my winge about somebody stealing my name, and they are not inconsistent with Dippy's ideas (logon etc).

The real cause of multiple posts is the very slow response of the Press F1 site to the post request. I am on Jetstream and sometimes the delay is so long between clicking post and seeing the lights on my modem twinkle(Nokia N1500 of course) that I think I am about to receive the dreaded 'site not available' message. It can be 15-20 seconds or more. The amount of data being sent is miniscule so why the delay?

Logic suggests that this is not at the Server end because I don't see any data sent during the wait period but it only happens on Press F1, all other sites are virtually instantaneous (especially when you notice a stupid mistake just as you click send and try desperately to stop it from being sent!!)

If it is the Press F1 site, fixing this would be a real help.

Cheers

31548 2002-01-17 04:51:00 It's perfect already. Isn't it?

Logging in, passwords ... this would also need security, so that credit card information can be passed (because this is the sort of thing that is neither easy or cheap to implement).

'... a series of pages ...' with INSTRUCTIONS. Do you read the instructions? When you install software do you read the series of pages of the guarantee that need a click at the end of each page, and the click to say that you have read and agree to the terms?

People don't read the instructions. They ask us.

My wish is for something which might reduce the multiple posts: an acknowledge page sent in response to a POST, saying 'Yes I got that. You don't need to send it again.', with a link which forces a reload of the home page.

As for the enciphered questions, 'Information hiding' became popular among the Computer Science people in the 70s. Anyway people don't need to be literate these days, they have computers.

31549 2002-01-17 05:48:00 lol graham....by login I mean something really simple....ie the login that is used at pcpitstop. enter your name and email address and that is it. No other info is required and the email addy could be used to send you the notification instead of having to have a seperate question for it. Yes PressF1 is very good at the moment but all things must change so why not try and guide the change in a direction that would benefit all??....as to the instructions I stated make it short and sweet....I mean just that....about 4 pages that pop up and state in BIG letters simple facts... i.e. press the post button only once and wait please, Please include as much information as possible regarding your problem.
please describe the error message or problem as accurately as possible. And yes I do read the instructions when installing programs etc....specially after visiting a 'educational' site that claimed it was free and for some reason I read the terms and discovered while the site was free the special call youmade to acess it was $10 US per minute....now I read ALL terms etc.
Keep the suggsetions coming please
