31494 2002-01-16 20:33:00 I downloaded this game off the internet and a windows prompt said that it needed to be run in MS-DOS mode, so I said yes and went back into the game. The Computer re-booted and went into the game, I lost the game 64-0 but thats not important. When I finished playing the game I couldn't find any way to exit the game, I re-booted the computer but it still kept loading into the game, the best that I can manage to get into is the PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility and a Boot Menu. I can't get into a MS-DOS Prompt

I'm running Windows 98, which like my losing score isn't important since I can't get in there.

Thanks

31495 2002-01-16 20:54:00 Have you tried using a boot disk? If you don't have one, find someone who has win98 and make a boot disk, this will allow you to boot to dos. Unfortunately i cant remember what win98 does to get it to boot into dos mode, but logic would suggest starting with the autoexec.bat Guest (0)
31496 2002-01-16 21:26:00 I'm not too sure if this option is in Win 98 or 95, but there used to be an option when booting to the game in DOS mode, before the game started it said something like 'Press ESC to cancel boot into Dos mode' or something like that. This is just seconds before the game should load, so watch for it - it might solve your problem.

Another suggestion is to press F8 (might have to do it continuously) to bring up a boot menu and choose to boot into Windows.

31497 2002-01-17 03:48:00 Looks like you need to exit the game properly using its exit command.

Look up the internet site for info on how to quit the game, or if that is not possible try some common DOS quit routines by pressing Ctrl and a letter -eg Ctrl-Q, Ctrl-Break or Ctrl-X.

PS: You might try giving us the name of the game, someone here might have played it and may know how to get out of it.

31498 2002-01-17 04:24:00 When it starts to load your dos drivers hit Ctrl-C a few times until it says:

Terminate batch job? (or similar)

Then choose yes, it should leave you at a dos prompt where typing EXIT will cause the computer to restart into windows.

31499 2002-01-17 05:15:00 Hi Bren,

I can see lots of people have already given some good advice on this. However, I think that the reason the program is running at startup is because it has made an entry into the autoexec.bat file which is causing it to execute.

Restart the computer at the DOS prompt. You can do this by pressing F8 when the computer displays 'Starting Windows 98...' as Mike has suggested (or any of the other methods previously suggested). This will bring up a boot menu which will allow you to restart the computer at the DOS prompt (Alternatively press F5 to bypass all startup files).

At the prompt type 'edit autoexec.bat'. Remove the line that refers to the game, save the file and restart the computer.

Are you ex Auckland and last heard of heading in the direction of Mt Aspiring? If so, say hi to your mum for me.
