31525 2002-01-17 03:10:00 I recently upgraded from win 98 to win xp and am unable to connect to certain websites that i could connect to in win 98.

The pattern seems to be only websites beginning with www will work, while most websites beginning with something else won't.

For example i am able to connect to www.ezboard.com but when connecting to find.ezboard.com i get 'The page cannot be displayed' with 'Cannon find server' in the the title bar.

However this isn't always true because i can connect to both www.yahoo.com and mail.yahoo.com

Does anyone know the solution to this frustrating problem?

31526 2002-01-17 03:38:00 I had the same problem... got round it by going thru Coogle.com - give that way a try, Gary

31527 2002-01-17 04:49:00 Do you mean Google.com?

How exactly does this fix the problem?

31528 2002-01-17 05:00:00 try typing

That's the correct syntax. Systems cater to laziness by adding the protocol information ahead of the URL. This is obviously setup to do it only for 'www' (and 'mail'?) hostname sites on your system. I would guess that XP has a setting which will get that back for you.

Going through google or another site will work because you get the full syntax in their links).

31529 2002-01-17 05:32:00 Unfortunately that didn't work.

Putting in the http:// still gives the same error.

Its not just mail.yahoo.com that works
greetings.yahoo.com
geocities.yahoo.com
login.yahoo.com
etc all work
(and the http:// is put in automatically)
Everything on yahoo seems to work. I haven't found any other server the same.

Going through google is no different. Weather i go to the url through typing in manually or clicking a link the general rule seems to be if it begins with www it works otherwise it doesn't. Except if it ends in yahoo.com

Hope this clarifies a few points about my problem.

31530 2005-05-13 00:13:00 I'm having the same problem but ONLY with www.ezboard.com.

It happens in both IE and my default browser FireFox.

I cleared my Cookies. I purged my Temp files and my history. I've reset my comp. Shut it down for a while too.

NOTHING.

I still get this message "The operation timed out when attempting to contact www.ezboard.com"

I tried find.ezboard.com Nothing.

This started happening about two weeks ago when a power hit in my neighbor hood caused my comp to shut down for a few minutes while the browser was open.

Everything involving the internet (Minus favorites/Bookmarks) got purged and I lost the ability to connect to ezboard.com.

Google doesn't work either. Linking does not solve my problem.

Before anyone suggests is, no. My comp was not surged I replace my SP every year, more often if I actually get a surge in the house.

31531 2005-05-13 00:33:00 Hi Phantom,

I just tried both of the URL's you have in your post and got the same page for both. This could mean that there is something wrong with the Ezboard site or that you need to be logged in to access the find.ezboard.com area.

Possibly the Ezboard site popped a cookie on your computer so that logging in wasn't necessary and this has been removed when you lost your browser settings.
