31533 2002-01-17 02:49:00 Hi Team

After reading so many comments lauding PowerDefrag I decided I must be missing something and dowloaded a copy of the trial version (unregistered).

The results have been quite frankly abysmal! It is slow as a wet week, registers all drives as only 2GB and on 4.3 GB data drive it runs slowly up to 44% then drops back to 37% and repeats this cycle several times before finally concluding with a rush.

I thought that the drive might have been more fragmented than expected so I tried to defrag a 2.1GB drive with 1.5GB of archive storage that was not fragmented at all. This too was very slow taking nearly an hour to defrag and cycling between 64% and 71% for a considerable proportion of that time. MS Defrag would usually finish this one in less than 10 minutes.

I'm afraid to try defragging my 20GB C: drive as I don't have that long to live!

The trial box is a P166 with 256 RAM and Win98 Original version. I've not had any problems using the MS Defrag utility but did find it a little slow perhaps on big drives. I have not needed to run it in Safe Mode either, though I recently started doing this after all the comments from disgruntled users.

Am I missing something really obvious here? Do I need to register before it will recognise disk sizes etc or does only the paid for version perform.

I'd be keen to hear comments from satisfied PDF users, including about how long they expect the program to take to defrag a 20GB drive with less that 3GB of data on it.

Cheers

31534 2002-01-17 03:17:00 Hi I used it once on my partitioned 4.00gb HD and also found it extremely slow. I put it down to having 'GoBack' running at the time, as the next time I opened GoBack, it stated 'Activity suspened due to massive HD activity'. Haven't tried it since so will be interested in your feedback. Regards Guest (0)
31535 2002-01-17 03:19:00 Hi Billy,

I have downloaded PDF Lite (Free) and have had no hassels at all.

Sounds like you may have a corrupted download, as it usually only takes 30mins at most to defrag my 20GB hard drive.....

Regards ALAN ;-)

31536 2002-01-17 03:39:00 Hi Billy, that is really strange as Power Defrag uses the Windows defrag utility anyway. The difference is only that it boots up with minimal features such as screen background and startup sound, so that defrag will run without re-starting over and over.
It also uses the Windows Scandisk and Scanreg utilities. You can try the greyed out options you may find they do work.

Sounds like one of the unanswered mysteries of Window.

31537 2002-01-17 03:42:00 lol.....30 minutes to defrag a 20gb HD.....I got 10gb of data on my 40gb drive and it takes about 10 minutes using the normal windows defrag. I found the secret to quick defrags is to do it often. especially if you have downloaded/shifted or deleted quite a bit in your last session. Not only does the puter run quicker and smoother but any consequent defrags you do are also quicker. I have also tried nortons speed disk that came with their utilities before consigning that gem of puter software to its rightful place...windows defrag was quicker. Guest (0)
31538 2002-01-17 03:43:00 ME defrag, is the one you want in win98. Guest (0)
31539 2002-01-17 04:21:00 There are probably some services still being started that power defrag didn't disable.

I just run defrag from safe mode, its the simplist solution.
