| 31964 | 2002-01-20 00:01:00 | I am unable to run several accessories in W98 at the moment. EG: when I try to run Paint, I get the message: The MSPAINT.EXE file is lined to missing export MFC42.dll:6452. I have searched for the .dll file concerned and it is present in both the Windows and Windows/system folders, so what has happened. This happens with a couple of other progs as well with different .dll files mentioned. Two things may have caused it - I uninstalled a trial version of CDClone, and, after unsuccessfully attempting to access Windows Update service, followed the instructions in their help section re removing the CV3 class file (I still can't get the update to work though). Any ideas on how to fix this mess without a total rebuild? |

| 31968 | 2002-01-20 03:47:00 | Barry, Tall and lanky once I was (tall and stout is more like these days) but I've never worked security I'm afraid, always electrical though. Obviously you were once aquainted with one of the same name - he must've been a wonderful chap. Tazzie - thanks, yes I've tried to reinstall a couple of the affected progs (not paint though) and still have the same result - might try a re-install of windows I think. I don't really want to start from scratch, but this install has lasted about three months, so must be reaching its use-by date. Jut can't understand that windows doesn't seem to recognise files in its own folder. |

| 31969 | 2002-01-20 04:50:00 | [1] Problem with programmes: Please post back if the earlier suggestion of reinstalling the programme/s does not work. The drivers may have been corrupted or 'unRegistered' and can be replaced from the CAB files on your Install or Recovery disc. See MS Knowledge Base - extract compressed file: Article ID: Q129605 [2] Problem with Windows 'Update': I will presume that having removed the ActiveX Control [CV3 class file] you were following the instructions in MS Knowledge Base Article Q243787 - yes (??) If you have followed their solution *exactly* and the problem remains ... try the following: Go - Start > Run and type REGSVR32 WUPDINFO.DLL into the command window (note the space) > press Enter or click Okay > click Yes on the prompt screen and then restart your system. Done. Cheers!!! e_ |

| 31970 | 2002-01-21 03:01:00 | Many thanx e_ and Tazzie. Both probles fixed. As suggested, the offending .dll had been replaced with a different version. Its a bit of a job searching the cabinet files isn't it? The file i needed was in cab 62 - i suppose its possible to write a batch file to automate the process but i'm a bit rusty at that. The WIndows update worked fine as well (at long last), I had to delete the wuhistv3.log file to finally achieve this though. Many thanks to all. Regards, Ray A. |
