32217 2002-01-21 09:37:00 Daughter running XP Home Edition, runs no problem but can't shut it down. It logs off then about 3 secs into Windows Shut down there is a cracking sound and the screen freezes. The only way out is to RESET to restart windows, there is one brief flash of starting info and the XP screen shows. Disk Cleanup & Defrag completed but can't Error Check as XP does'nt shut down. Earlier windows had a registry check tool but XP Home Edition does'nt list this tool. Earlier windows used F8 to get into safe mode but the brief flash gives no opportunity to check if there is a 'XP is now starting' message.Dr Watson and System Restore are the next avenues. Appreciate any useful comments or similar experiences.Frank. Guest (0)
32218 2002-01-22 02:33:00 ...earlier this morning i was reading of a similar problem at the following site.

From memory, a 'fix' was available.

Hope it's useful if no XP users respond.

Cheers!!!

32219 2002-01-22 21:22:00 Thanks for site, will plough my way through it and hope to find some pearls of wisdom. Annoying that all programmes work OK except found whilst XP upgrades and security upgrades download they will not install. Looks like back to the supplier under guarantee for a reinstal. Frank.
