32402 2002-01-22 08:04:00 Hi all,
Have got a 40G HD here that will only show 5,900 meg.
It had a botched install of XP and the drive was formatted in NTFS, trying to install 98se onto it but it said it didnt have a valid FAT or FAT32 file system, so I used FDISK and created a partition in FAT32, only to end up with 5,400 meg, looking at the partition info in FDISK I seen it still had a partition of NTFS, so I deleted that and deleted the FAT32 one as well and then created a new Primary DOS Partition, but, only ended up with 5,900 meg. Whats happened to the other 34 Gig??
I have treid numerous times to delete and create a new Primary Partition but still end up missing 34 Gig.
Help!! Please.

Regards,

Ken.

32403 2002-01-22 08:21:00 Did you reformat the drive after the botched install?? I had a similair problem and after enabling large disk support and then created a primary and secondary partitions. Only then was fdisk giving me a true report on my HD size. Try starting from scratch and reformat then create a new primary partition. You will probably also need to create a couple of secondary partitions also. Not just to help your puter but for your own ease of use too....40g is a big drive. Guest (0)
32404 2002-01-22 09:13:00 A bit of a silly question, but have you got a BIOS capable of recognising a 40Gb drive? Guest (0)
32405 2002-01-23 01:09:00 Yip, BIOS knows what it is.
It (XP) had formatted it in NTFS, but when I went to put FAT32 and Win98se on it I only got 5,900 Meg out of it.

Have tried things from the start agin, deleting all partitions and creating a new Primary of 4000 Meg and Ext DOS of 1,900, that went ok, but still missing 36 Gig somewhere :(

If I try and create a partition exceeding the stated size it wont do it.

32406 2002-01-23 01:46:00 IBM give away a programme which clears the first sectors of a disk so it looks like a 'fresh out of the factory' one.

Use the search window on this page: 'zap.exe' and click on the 'PressF1' button and 'Go'.
