32759 2002-01-25 02:55:00 You have tried delete haven't you? Or do you mean getting it off the taskbar (thing by the clock)? If so, simply go into MSN Messenger and click on Tools >options then at the top click on preference. It should say ... something. untick the one which you think apply to you. I think it run in the background or something. sorry can't remember.

Direct delets usually don't work with that icon

32761 2002-01-25 03:21:00 What operating system are you using? Because as I understand it, MSN is an integral part of Windows XP, and hence deleting it will be slightly different to Win9X.

Win9X just uninstall MSN under Control Panel/Add\Remove Applications and it will remove the icons for you.

32762 2002-01-25 03:38:00 If you do not intend to use messenger, right click on the icon and select 'close' or exit or whatever it says. Then go into explorer and right click on messenger and then delete. This gets rid of it for good and also halts the perpetual messages telling you to sign up for hot mail.

32763 2002-01-25 04:28:00 If you want to stop it placing itself in the taskbar each time windows starts up, click <start><run> the type <msconfig> the select the <statup> tab, scrool down till you find <MSMSGS> and untick the box beside it. now restart your computer. Guest (0)
32764 2002-01-25 07:21:00 If you still want to use but want to save your resources and you have win 9x do as Ian says, msconfig doesn't stick. I don't know re win 2000/XP

Hope that helps

32765 2002-01-26 04:10:00 For those interested in removing MSN Messenger service from XP, here's how to do it.

Locate SYSOC.INF in the \Windows\INF folder (hidden file and folder), Open it in Notepad and locate the line: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
Remove the word 'hide' from the line and save the file. You will now have an entry in add/remove programs.

OR

XP Pro Only - leave it installed, but tell Windows to never let it run. If you're running XP Professional, you can use GPEDIT.MSC (XP version of MSConfig) to prevent Messenger from loading. Otherwise, even disabling it in startup won't cause it to 'always' not run. NOTE: Outlook, Outlook Express and some Microsoft web pages can still make it load.

Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Messenger
You can now modify whether it starts initially and/or whether it's to run at all.
