1289467 2012-07-19 10:01:00 Hi all (mainly Chill)

I've got permission to look at a new router. Yay!
Budget of around $150. Which ones should I be suggesting?

:thanks:

1289469 2012-07-19 11:46:00 Got one of these today (www.pbtech.co.nz). Dont know if checkout made a mistake, because its $136 on the site. I only paid $113 ($18 extra for replacing the TP-link - It was $95 when I brought it).

So far so good. Used to have the TD-W8960N. But the first one kept deleting its NAT entries. So, took it back. But the 2nd one started to lock up for some reason. Last night, and this morning. The Internet/DSL LED's stayed on. But, I couldn't get on the internet. So, took that back this morning, to get a replacement (the ASUS). The ASUS was easier / and didnt take as long to connect. Once, I logged into it, and typed in my username / password.

1289470 2012-07-19 13:00:00 Depends, you could probably pick up the NB6Plus4Wn quite easily within that price range, or if you wanna tinker then look to spend closer to $200 for the Draytek DV-120 and a Gargoyle Router as mentioned in my blog :-) Chilling_Silence (9)
1289471 2012-07-19 13:23:00 seconding the nbplus idea. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
1289472 2012-07-19 13:33:00 3rd party firmware is a good thing if you can get it.

Try to find something with decent hardware first and foremost though. Software is no good without something stable to put it on.

1289473 2012-07-19 20:58:00 Yeah the TP-Link becomes amazing with Gargoyle!

4x gigabit LAN ports, 300mbps WiFi, great coverage, its got 32MB RAM so plenty to keep history and things in the router, as well as 8MB Flash so as extra features are added you have no worries... But the best part is that its reliable! Even under load, taking a real beating, its still solid! :-)

Well, where to start. If it is left on overnight, it won't work again in the morning. Even if it isn't, it still sometimes wont work. It usually needs to be unplugged at least twice a day. And, if too many device (5+ it seems to be) are connected, the whole thing grinds to a halt. I'm pretty sure it isn't our connection, so it would appear to be our touter that is the problem.

1289475 2012-07-19 23:24:00 Yeah it's that Netgear one right?

If you can stretch your budget, then go Gargoyle. If $150 is the *hard* limit, then stick with the NB6Plus4Wn :) You'll certainly be happy with the NB6Plus4Wn to say the least!

1289476 2012-07-20 01:16:00 Wohoo! Have convinced a budget upgrade may be in store - a $250 *hard* max. Just for extra information, at any one time we usually have
1 pc connected via ethernet
2 laptops via wifi
a smartpohone and iPod touch via wifi
2 android tablets via wifi.

Not really sure if that is useful or not.
Cheers
