| 1289451 | 2012-07-19 09:27:00 | Ok, here's something silly. I just happened to destroy my Arch install. (by doing something so extremely retarded, that I don't dare mention). But, now, I am stuck in the post GRUB screen. The system is completely unresponsive... I can't restart the machine. Holding the Power button for over a minute didn't turn it off... Nor can I pull the batter out. I get ~6 hours of battery life under normal usage... In this way, doing nothing I can see this staying on for a long long time... Does anyone have any idea of anything I could do to turn the damn thing off other than just sitting and waiting? Samsung QX412. :( |

| 1289452 | 2012-07-19 09:57:00 | I think you are just going to have to wait it out. The power button is usually a hardware function to shut down, I'm surprised it doesn't work as you would expect. Go on, tell us what you did... :D edit: presumably the "post grub screen" means it has hung prior to loading a kernel image so ctrl-alt-sysrq-k won't help either. |

There's no nice way to say this, but that 6 hours will give you time to think about why on earth you bought something with a non-removable battery... |

Well, I didn't care about that to be honest. Nor do I now. What does annoy the hell out of me is the fact that the damn power button isn't hard wired. |

I don't know what your strategy will be if it ever gets wet, then. That button is indeed a strange thing. But in troubleshooting I have also noticed some machines that locked up at POST due to hardware faults wouldn't respond to the power button either. Most would, but not some. |
