To continue, you must first add this website to your trusted sites in Internet Explorer .
The site cannot determine which updates apply to your computer or display those updates unless you change your security settings to allow ActiveX controls and active scripting . The best way to do this without lowering your security settings is to make this site a trusted website . Your security settings will continue to block potentially harmful ActiveX controls and scripting from other sites but you will be able to get updates .

To make this site a trusted website:

In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options . (OK - I did that)
On the Security tab, click the Trusted Sites icon . (This works too)
Click Sites and under Add this website to the zone, copy and paste these website addresses . You can only add one address at a time and you must click Add after each one . (This is where the wheels fall off)

Note that you may need to uncheck "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone . " (Oh yeah! Where in the heck is THIS?!?!?)

http://update . microsoft . com
https://update . microsoft . com
http://* . update . microsoft . com
https://* . update . microsoft . com
http://download . windowsupdate . com

Note: The asterisks and different addresses allow your computer to work with the site, no matter how you try to access it from your computer or the Web .

I'm only trying to get M$ updates, not some secret stuff .

I believe this worked last week - but today? Noooooooooooooooooooo!

I clicked on the Internet Options>>Trusted Sites>> and there ain't no: to allow ActiveX controls and active scripting stuff nowhere!

Any ideas where I can find it? I'm going around in circles here .

XP-Pro, SP-3 .

Just lower the security settings.

Or use a real browser instead.

For Windows Update?

1289358 2012-07-19 14:20:00 I'll lower the Security settings for the update - and it ONLY comes in with IE - so that's not supposed to be an issue - right?

I am not using the Firefox: "Open This In Internet Explorer" add-on.
