1265796 2012-03-19 01:44:00 A big debate is on and running here in the US concerning a meat product called 'pink slime'. It is recollected waste that is centrifuged and purified with the fat being slung out of the meat and then it is hit with a 'puff' of an ammonia gas to kill any possible disease organisms.

A blurb:

Amid a growing social media storm over so-called "lean finely textured beef," the Agriculture Department announced Thursday that, starting next fall, schools involved in the national school lunch program will have the option of avoiding the product.

Under the change, schools will be able to choose between 95 percent lean beef patties made with the product or less lean bulk ground beef without it. The change won't kick in immediately because of existing contracts, according to a USDA official with knowledge of the decision.

Though the term "pink slime" has been used pejoratively for at least several years, it wasn't until last week that social media suddenly exploded with worry and an online petition seeking its ouster from schools. The petition quickly garnered hundreds of thousands of supporters.

The low-cost ingredient is made from fatty bits of meat left over from other cuts. The bits are heated to about 100 F and spun to remove most of the fat. The lean mix then is compressed into blocks for use in ground meat. The product, made by South Dakota-based Beef Products Inc., also is exposed to "a puff of ammonium hydroxide gas" to kill bacteria, such as E. coli and salmonella.

The department said it continues to affirm the safety of the ammonia-treated lean finely textured beef as a filler, but that it wanted to be transparent and that school districts wanted choices.

Mixed emotions here - but I don't find it as bad as 'meat glue'. Heard of that stuff?

1265797 2012-03-19 02:06:00 There was something here 6 months ago about meat glue. Can't say that bothered me much as it was mostly restaurants using it and who can afford to eat at them. plod (107)
1265798 2012-03-19 02:27:00 Actually here in the US - meat glue is converting cheaper cuts into filets and steaks and no-one can tell that they were inferior cuts. It's fraud and not even the experts can detect the meat has been glued together from poorer meats. SurferJoe46 (51)

I forgot to say that those created cuts are possibly showing up in our markets. and although it's approved as wholesome, it's still fraud.

Saw it on ABC News over the past week. Becoming a big thing over there. Wonder if our meat producers do the same here with ground beef??

It was interesting in that once the kids had been shown what was involved the Pommy kids turned their nose up at it but the Yankee kids still quite happily hogged into it because they had been eating that crap for so long.
He also did a program in the USA of getting schools to create healthier meals. I think he felt in the end that he was knocking his head against a brick wall.

Kids raised on McNuggets (what part of a chicken is the 'nuggets' anyway?) will eat any pasted together meat.

Reminds me of the incorrectly attributed article supposedly by Mark Twain about 'The Treatise About Boiling A Frog'. Start 'em off with minor adulterants and after a bit they're eating ground up tree bark with artificial flavors and colors.
