1265443 2012-03-16 23:54:00 I am mystified about the road to be opened between Mount Cook and Hokitika. Are they talking about Arthur's Pass?

Our Greymouth correspondent informs us that a road has been opened through to the West Coast from Mount Cook.

1265444 2012-03-17 02:53:00 Sorry Bob ... I'm not THAT old ... but Arthur's Pass would be my bet. Unless of course they attempted to put one through in summer and found that it was impassable for most of the year. I've hunted up that way for years and haven't heard about any other road from the locals, nor seen any visible signs of any old track that could be classed as a road ... mind you, back then they were a hardy lot and it would have been bullock tracks to begin with. Central Otago has some really special "roads" ... driven them in the comfort of a 4WD in summer ... couldn't imagine doing it in a wagon towed by bullocks in the middle of winter ... many perished due to the cold, but the gold drove people to do some reckless things back then. 1265445 2012-03-17 08:37:00 I wonder if it is the Copland track which comes out on the Westcoast south of Fox Glazier. Bobh (5192)
