During the first Gulf war in 91 the American pilots refused to do low level flying missions as they thought the risk of being shot down to be too great, so all low level missions were flown by the RAF. As a kid growing up in the UK we used to climb the North Downs behind our village and watch the RAF practising below us, we also used to go to Folkestone and watch the airshow, nothing unusual there you might say but you got to watch from the cliff tops while the planes where flying just off shore and at eye level so you didn't get neck strain from watching |

| 1265321 | 2012-03-16 02:25:00 | Many years ago I was a motorcycle courier working in London. One (very cold) winter I was booked for an early morning trip to Nottingham - can't remember where it was, but it was close to the delivery point (but still rural), I was riding along a ridge line with a valley dropping away from me on my left. I suddenly noticed some movement out of the corner of my left eye. Next thing I know there was an RAF jet whizzing past me at some incredible speed at what seemed like about 100ft away from me - at road level (but over the valley obviously). Closely followed by another one! Nearly peed my leathers!! Mind you, that might have been quite welcome at that point because I was nearly frozen to the bike!! |

The RNZAF have just taken delivery of the first of 8 brand new NH90 helicopters, with a trans Tasman range, and equipped with all sorts of goodies to make most rotary wing aviators salivate HERE (www.airforce.mil.nz) :) |
