1265577 2012-03-19 20:14:00 I'd agree with those that don't trust DVDs, I've had a lot a failures when going back to old disks and trying to read them. I find CDs generally very reliable long term but haven't had the same success with DVDs. That said I've settled on 3 brands that have done fairly well for me;

Taiyo Yuden
Mitsubishi
Verbatim (which is actually still mitsubishi)

I've had terrible experiences with cheap brands like princo and also even with imation which I thought had a good name. I don't really burn disks any more though, I just keep everything on a hard drive and make a backup on another drive if it's important. file transfers to other people I do with a 32 GB flash drive.

I was going to suggest something similar to your solution, if you burn to an iso image or hard drive folder as a dual layer DVD you can then compress it to fit on a single layer with DVD shrink or Nero recode

1265578 2012-03-19 22:46:00 Change the encoding size/codec so that it will fit onto a single DVD. Some of the burning programs will do this for you.
After all a Bluray movie can be shrunk down to fit on a single DVD (or CD with quality loss)

Another consideration.
There are +R & -R disks, 2 slightly competing formats (Remember the DVD format wars)
You'll want to make sure you writer is compatible with the type of dual layer disk you try to write to.
I'd imagine that some of the dusty ooooold DVD readers may have some DL read issues as well. Some of the early older drives arnt allways dual layer compatable (both formats)

Reading the original post...
This isnt for a backup , so dont worry about longevity or reliability, its irrelevant. The other option is to split it across 2 DVD's .

1265579 2012-03-20 00:13:00 I bought a Verbatim DVD+R Double Layer 8.5 Gb from Warehouse Stationery. I am yet to try the double layer DVD out. They normally sell for $5.95 but they ere discounted to $4.76. It may be cheaper to use two single layer DVDs as suggested earlier.

In the end I found that the movie editing programme was able to fit it onto a single layer DVD using software to shrink it.
