1265127 2012-03-15 19:26:00 I haven't yet had any concern about NZ police and guns, shootings are uncommon and seem to be last resort as they should be. When you watch american programs though they give you the impression shooting someone is perfectly acceptable even if they are just running away from you.

I watched a reality show about american traffic police one time where the police had trapped someone in a stolen truck and he was driving up and down a short section of road they had blocked off at both ends. He was going nowhere and to my mind would have realised it eventually or run out of fuel. One of the brave officers ran up and shot him through the door as he was slowly driving down the road. I'm sure you could argue he was a danger to the public or the police as long as he was in control of the truck but to my mind he was contained already and there was no immediate need to shoot him.

The more common handguns become with both criminals and police, the more likely it is people will get shot. I really don't want to see NZ let the gun situation get that bad.

Good on the police for shooting a thief.

Surely Pre it suggest they couldn't hit a barn door.

1265130 2012-03-15 20:52:00 Unfortunately the police officer in question shot about 10" low and to the side ... not sure if it was left or right. He needs to go back to the range and reset his sights.

1265131 2012-03-15 23:48:00 I have never blamed NZ feld polizei for missing their targets with pistols. Unless they are used almost weekly its hard to be consistent. I have never fired a Glock but have fired a 9mm Browning a few times and I think its more accurate to throw the whole pistol at the target. The AOS are a pack of posers.
This case was just so begging for a volley of head shots though.

1265132 2012-03-16 00:15:00 When you get a knife "weilding" a man around your neighbourhood, you may well be pleased if the law pots the knife. ;) R2x1 (4628)

Isn't that where the whole barn door thing came in.

1265134 2012-03-16 02:44:00 Pistols are in reality a close quarter weapon and are not exactly known for sniper accuracy. I have fired the 9mm Smith and Western pistol and they are not a particularly accurate weapon. People either side of the target could be as much at risk of being hit if the pistol is fired from a distance.

The cowboy gun slingers had inferior weapons but more than likely had plenty of practice and luck. Western movies make it look easy.

Yes he would have to be a strong man to wield an 80kg bar.
