1265539 2012-03-17 21:52:00 That brings back a lot of memories. I served on board the USS Saratoga CV-60 from 87-90 on the flight deck as a lowly blue shirt. Loooong hours, hot exhaust, louder than anything you have ever heard in your life (trust me on that one) and danger everywhere. It's funny, I hated it back then but would do it all again given the chance. We used to say that NAVY stood for "Never again volunteer yourself". scottmcp432 (16647)
1265540 2012-03-17 21:54:00 Very interesting thanks. tut (12033)
1265541 2012-03-17 21:57:00 Yes and very dangerous. Heard a story of a bloke getting sucked into the jet intake of a Corsair. Trev (427)

Russell Norman would have nightmares after that

1265544 2012-03-17 23:35:00 Massive ship. Six thousand on board. More aircraft on one ship than the RNZAF has. Bobh (5192)
1265545 2012-03-18 00:45:00 Massive ship. Six thousand on board. More aircraft on one ship than the RNZAF has.

More ship than the entire NZ Navy. More crew than a large number of NZ towns too.

1265546 2012-03-18 01:01:00 Interesting, but it seems hundreds of staff and resources, per round, just to fling a few jets of the ship, of which has not really changed in over 50 years. Why not do vertical takeoffs, e.g with british harriers type jets, or a twin lower/upper deck partioned horizontal runaway to simplify and speed things up. Now 3 billion in technology, but almost the same in their massive staff payroll? kahawai chaser (3545)
1265547 2012-03-18 03:28:00 Thanks Trev I enjoyed that. The sight of the lumbering fuel tanker being shot was spectacular. Its a bit like towing an elephant except the darned thing actually flies. Winston001 (3612)
