| 33071 | 2002-01-27 08:21:00 | I have a new computer (Athlon XP1600, 512Mb RAM, 40Gb HDD., DVD drive, etc) and I have installed Win XP thereon. Works fine BUT....I also have Encarta 2000 (old but trustworthy) and I have installed that on the machine. After bootup, if I want to access Encarta, XP is very happy and lets me access the full Encarta. But if I leave the programme, remove the DVD and then start again, no dice, to get into Encarta again I have to reboot. Now I have two OSs on my computer the other of which is Win98 and after installing Encarta under Win 98 there isn't a problem, coming and going as much as I like using the same computer and the same DVD drive. What gives? Is this some deep, sinister XP plot to make customers stop using old software and buy the very latest? Has anyone else experienced this? Am I just thick and simply failed to activate some simple software switch. I will be happy if it is only that as I can't be bothered rebooting...Dave | Guest (0) | ||

| 33073 | 2002-01-28 04:09:00 | Thanks Graham and I shall remember the point. However, in the last two hours, I have been pursuing it further and decided to look at software incompatibility. I had a HP 8300 CD Writer in the system (which is being repaired ) and installed supposedly XP 'compatible' software into the system. I had HP Simple Backup, HP CDNow and HP DLA. I uninstalled the lot and the problem disappeared!!! I think it might be the DLA which conflicts with Win Mediaplayer and tries to disable it. Encarta is now up and running as it should. Thanks for your comment...Dave | Guest (0) | ||
