33002 2002-01-26 15:38:00 Cut and paste from another forum. Why don't we have individuals like this?

My dad's Athlon XP 1800+ setup w/ EP-8KHA+ caught fire when my foot accidentally knocked the power button when I was installing a water cooler on the CPU to overclock it. Thankfully, I had a pitcher of water for the water cooler by my side. So I quickly poured the water onto the motherboard and CPU. They are both ruined and I am trying to get a refund.

Now I need a replacement computer, all of the accessories and peripherals are still in good shape, it is just the motherboard and CPU that are ruined. I am never going to use an AMD setup again because of its high flammability. This is really not funny after what has happened to me. I decided to turn to Intel, but I require some help in selecting a motherboard for the Northwood.

Which is the best chipset for a DDR solution? I am leaning towards the 845-D because of its high compatibility and stability. I prefer ATA133 as well as integrated RAID for my extra HDD. I also want USB 2.0 integrated for an upgrade path. I have compiled a list of possible motherboard manufacturers: MSI, ASUS, SOYO, ABIT, EPOX, and GIGABYTE. I want the one that offers the least amount of problems. Which is the best overclocker? It is surprising that I have not learned that overclocking can do harm to your computer. :-)

Thanks for your opinions.

I don't really see what benefit you would get out of running an 1800MHz-odd processor and extra few hundred cycles faster.

The fool should stick to putting fluffy dice in his car.

33004 2002-01-26 23:53:00 The ability to brag is the main reason for overclocking, that and to get the most out of your system. Lots of people do it just so that they can get the average time per work unit in SETI or THINK down.

That guy mentioned above must be a complete idiot. Why the hell did he have the power still running through the computer. Most people switch the power off at the wall before doing any work under the case.

JM

PS. There's nothing wrong with overclocking provided that that it is done properly.

He doesn't sound the brightest.
