2002-01-25 23:32:00 | Recently we had e_ (whom I had previously had no issues with) doing a tearful farewell because F1 had become so utterly intolerable that she couldn't bear to continue. Funny thing is that two days earlier she had made a post entitled PLEASE LEAVE THE 'PRESS F1' BOARD ALONE (!!!), in which she wrote: 'At the risk of being 'flamed' off the Board, I have started this thread for the silent (majority?) who like PRESS F1 just the way it is - warts and all - and don't want any changes.' Well, I guess the deterioration over that two days must have been pretty severe in her mind. The other odd thing is that the farewell speech was originally made in someone else's post, but when no response was detected, another post was made - presumably so she could watch the tributes flow in. Personally, I thought her reasons were (excuse me) pathetic. Re-loading a legal copy of NAV and finding that the updates still work is theft? Give me a break. I reload my machine about twice a year as a matter of routine and it never occurred to me that my $110 software package was only effective for a year. So I guess I was stealing BY ACCIDENT. Is that possible? Let's get the police to round up everyone who's ever taped one of their records to play in the car (technically a copyright violation) or exceeded 50km in a 50km zone. Then at the other extreme we've got the tossers who like to lob grenades from behind the safety and anonymity of a nickname. Those people are beneath comtempt. I think we need to find some middle ground folks: For those of you who post recommendations, please don't automatically assume that you're going to get unqualified adulation. If you've inadvertently boosted software that has spyware or pop-ups or hidden limits, then anyone else has the right to point this out to the other punters. This is not 'negativity', it's information. You should be grateful that someone has stepped in to stop you wasting others' time. You need to harden up a bit. This board is pretty good considering that it doesn't have (and can't have) a team of full-time moderators. Robo has a real job besides this, and I for one am very grateful to him for putting the extra effort in. He has to work within the limits of the software as we all do. It's a shame e_ couldn't hang around to see the new software when it arrives - perhaps it will address the issues some of us have.

2002-01-26 00:03:00 | Agree with most of that John, except about e_'s reasons. With the number of posts this board gets, two days IS a long time, and Id have to agree with e_ in that the last couple of days there have been some really snarky postings made, some of which I find offensive given that the people they are directed at are the ones they in turn ask for free advice to solve all their computer woes. People need to remember, this is a free board, with free advice, offered by people who would normally charge for this sort of service. If you want the right to complain about service, then pay someone for the service, until then just bite your tongues and be grateful for what many people are prepared to do for you.

2002-01-26 01:28:00 | i don't know if you guys have noticed but this board does not get many posts. its busy at the mo.....which sure beats the 2 posts per day we were getting a while back. if this board starts getting 300+ posts per day then two days might be condidered 'a long time' ;-) don't forget all posts/help/recommendations are to be treated as is/where is and with a pinch of salt.

2002-01-26 04:33:00 | All pretty good comments. I really started looking at the posts after Les Hibbard had a problem with the backing up of his hard drive. I really only wanted to watch the progress of the help he got from this board. I just want to say thanks to all for helping him. Anyway I digress. Now I daily check check the board to see if my limited knowledge can be of help to others. Sure we get a few posts that stray asking for 'Who won the cricket' and so on but thats life. As for John's comments on the NAV issue, I feel he is correct. Why should someone who has bought legit software only for it to run out after 1 year.... it's just another way of the software people screwing money out of the people who are willing to pay for the service. Also said was we are all volunteers.... and that must be made very clear.... if e_ doesn't want to volunteer to help that's her perogative (I think thats how you spell it). Everyone must remember we are ALL different with different computing systems and not everyone will be happy 100% of the time. Chris The C ....out.. PS My wife now dreads me getting into F1 as it always takes me ages to read the posts and help with the ones I can.

2002-01-26 04:42:00 | * ...a friend told me to take another look at this Forum: Wow!!! Thank you for the many kind words on the 'Last Post' thread. i would not have known. ----------------------- i post to clarify the (*singular*) reason for my departure from Press F1: 'The EDITORIAL standard has fallen below a level that is acceptable in my view'. Therefore i choose not to support IDG NEW ZEALAND any more... ...Simple as that. The view i hold is mine, mine alone, and i have made no attempt to convince others it is correct. This has *nothing at all* to do with the postings from visitors. Postings here are no better and no worse than other Forums of a similar nature. Thank you again for the kind words. Best wishes to you all !!! e_ * TIP (for John Calvert) - it is important to read postings carefully, John. You write: (i) 'Recently we had e_ (whom I had previously had no issues with) doing a *tearful farewell* [empasis added] because F1 had become so utterly intolerable that she couldn't bear to continue.' ...John - read my 'Reason' for departure. ('Tearful' ?? Not. My usual dispassionate posting style. Although i confess to shedding a tear on reading the wonderful comments which followed.) (ii) 'The other odd thing is that the farewell speech was originally made in someone else's post, *but when no response was detected* [emphasis added], another post was made - presumably so she could watch the tributes flow in.' ...John - the time difference between my two postings you refer is 3 minutes and 52 seconds. Think about it, John. (iii) 'Personally, I thought her reasons were (excuse me) pathetic.' ...maybe, John. But they are mine. i wouldn't trample over your views. (iv) 'Funny thing is that two days earlier she had made a post entitled PLEASE LEAVE THE 'PRESS F1' BOARD ALONE (!!!), in which she wrote: 'At the risk of being 'flamed' off the Board, I have started this thread for the silent (majority?) who like PRESS F1 just the way it is - warts and all - and don't want any changes.' Well, I guess the deterioration over that two days must have been pretty severe in her mind.' ...once again, John - read my 'Reason' for departure. (v) 'It's a shame e_ couldn't hang around to see the new software when it arrives - perhaps it will address the issues some of us have.' ...and again, John - read my 'Reason' for departure. * Erica J. | 32840 | 2002-01-26 05:22:00 | RE Free software Part one!I guess if you find being labeled paranoiac terribly offensive then I guess I am a coward. But a better way of putting their[Kame,Muzz] message across would'nt go amiss now would it.Then we all can grow up a bit right. | Guest (0) | |
2002-01-26 06:06:00 | Hi e_ good to hear from you again. Would you be able to clarify something for me, when you say 'The EDITORIAL standard has fallen below a level that is acceptable in my view'. what exactly are you referring to, that robo hasn't been editing stuff enough, or that IDG in general (ie. all their magazines). I think we all have to remember that what is mentioned in PressF1 is not endorsed by IDG. * Jeremy W B Matthews PS. Seems like you've started a trend e_ with people using their name at the end of the post.
