2002-01-26 06:20:00 | Hi Erica Regarding the time difference between your two posts: I concede that this did not allow for any waiting. My apologies for the error. However my main point remains unchanged. You post a big denunciation of F1 'editorial standard' in one thread, then open another to point to it. This is attention seeking behaviour. I've re-read your posts as you request, and nothing in your text leads me to revise my opinion. a) 'Quality Help Forums DO NOT endorse cracking, hacking and theft.' Since none of these three things were suggested by JM, no endorsement of them could have occurred. There was absolutely no reason for Robo to remove the post. I think an apology to him is in order. b) 'I wouldn't trample over your views.' Trample away. This is a FORUM. Did you think it was a soap-box on which you could deliever unchallenged diatribes against F1/IDG. Frankly, I would consider accusations of 'theft' and complicitly far more serious and objectionable than 'view trampling' No doubt I've made myself unpopular with your many admirers - that can't be helped if I'm to put across my point of view. I didn't like your cheap shot against Robo - It was uncalled for and undeserved. I've left behind heaps of forums of many kinds that I didn't care for - I don't make a spectacle of myself by issuing a furious indictment on my way out - I just bugger off and find something else that's more to my liking. Cheers John

2002-01-26 08:02:00 | Now I begin to realise that maybe there is a reason why sometimes it takes me ages to put my point across properly in writing. I don't know how this thread slipped through without my notice. Yes, things were a bit ugly a few days back. Yes, we get off topic now and again. Yes, we are going to lose a few people and gain a few. Yes, Erica has every right to take issue with the board, or PCW, or IDG. I remember once when I wrote a rebuttal to the editorial in the subsequent issue because I thoroughly disagreed. I think some of us take things a little too seriously, now and again. Also, what is written down sometimes looks worse than it would feel if it was said. This board is about helping people first, and entertainment second. Activity lately has been great, mostly. If we offend people now and again, that's life. We don't try to. But some of the stuff a few days back was really nasty, and the people that did it were very destructive. They didn't deserve any kind of nice treatment. I am sure SY wasn't too happy (actually, I know he wasn't). Anyway, let's get on with our lives, people. Somewhere, a PC just had a general protection fault. robo.

2002-01-26 14:10:00 | Hi e_ So you are choosing not to support IDG anymore.... I take it, you don't intend to buy PCWorld anymore - or have you cancelled your subscrition? Actually, I was the particular person who had a major beef with PCWorld, and Robo over that 'joke article' re hacking your friends computer. I was told to lighten up or whatever, not just by Robo, but also by others who's advice I had respected. Quite frankly I felt quite insulted by some of the comments, ESPECIALLY Robos. However, I finally accepted that the article was really mean't as a joke and nothing more, and I made my peace in this forum. What I am trying to say really is, don't spit the dummy. You don't have to agree with everything that is said @ PressF1. By not visiting here, or not buying the mag, you are the only looser. Regards, RINGO :-)

2002-01-28 04:16:00 | * ...i received a phone call this morning. The caller urged me to return and defend myself from three 'personal attacks' on this 'Message Thread'. From my 'reading' of this 'Thread' there are only two: * ERIN SALMON, 26/01/02 22:50:08 and * JOHN CALVERT, 26/01/02 18:20:25. [CALVERT makes two postings - returning a second time when his first attempt falls over, 26/01/02 11:32:39] ...i choose not to respond. At issue is a matter of ETHICS - the THEFT of annual subscriptions from a 'Live Update' Service. The stand i have taken is well known: CALVERT and SALMON have chosen to make their views in defence of this THEFT a matter of Public record. My right-of-reply to the 'personal attacks' is exercised simply to SUMMARIZE and assist first-time readers of the 'Thread' (and future researchers). Each reader will have an individual point of view: [1] This writer chose to stop supporting IDG NEW ZEALAND after disagreeing with the EDITORIAL response to the following message: '...If you uninstall NAV, and then use a decent registry cleaner or manually remove all of the NAV registry keys. Reinstall NAV and your Live Updates should be working again. Or alternatively you would most likely be able to find a download on the web that would alter the particular regitry [sic] entry renewing your live updates...' That posting, the EDITORIAL response, my own and others - can be viewed at the following: * NORTON'S ANTI VIRUS, 24/01/02 14:58:54: www.idg.net.nz [2] This writer then made a new post to highlight the issue. That posting and its responses can be viewed at the following': * ...and she 'Plays the Last Post', 24/01/02 21:30:18: www.idg.net.nz [3.1] For the record: (a) JOHN CALVERT is a male of undisclosed age and describes himself as having '...worked for a lot of computer companies, from IBM with 100+ programmers, down to little shops with half a dozen...' / [Press F1 - 22/01/02 18:37:05] (b) ERIN SALMON, from what this writer can ascertain from his other postings, is a young boy. (c) THIS WRITER is a grandmother and *previously* a regular contributor to the PRESS F1 Forum. [3.2] This 'Message Thread' - and those referred to above - have been uploaded to another Database and searchable archive. In due course they will also be available on the 'Way Back Machine': http://web.archive.org/ * Erica J. Sharpe CC: Mark Evans, On Line Business Manager <mark_evans@idg.co.nz>

2002-01-28 06:19:00 | I fell asleep on the couch this afternoon and I had the strangest dream. Can any of you figure this out? . [The scene: A courtroom. The Prosecuting Attourney is just winding up his interrogation of the Detective Inspector in a fraud case] . P.A. : 'Can you tell us, Detective Inspector, how you first managed to round up this dangerous criminal.' D.I. Plod: 'It was all thanks to a public spirited citizen, and ...' P.A. : 'And?' D.I. Plod: 'Well, he used his own name, so there were about twenty public sources of information: IRD records, Driver's licence, land title, voter registration, car registration ...'. P.A. 'But the testimony of our secret witness, 'e_', was crucial was it not?' e_: it was!!! it was!!! Judge: Silence in the court! And only use one exclamation mark. Didn't you read Mr Calvert's thread: 'Pedantic Fanatic'?' P.A. 'Hmmm, well that will be all thank you Detective Inspector. Over to the defence.' D.A. 'Defence calls Peter Norton.' [A murmer ripples through the crowd] Peter Norton: 'Hang 'im! Hang 'im high!' D.A. 'Yes, yes, Mr Norton - I understand your agitation, but please wait for the questions. Now, Mr Norton ... if a user reloaded his computer including NAV, what would happen within a couple of weeks?' Peter Norton: 'Well, they would be prompted to do a live update.' D.A. : 'And if they followed that instruction?' Peter Norton: 'Well, we'd give it to them.' D.A. : 'Is that because it's technically impossible to establish the date of first installation.' Peter Norton: 'Oh no. Easy. We only allow registered software to download updates, and we keep the date of the registration on file.' D.A. : 'So, if you wanted to you could refuse to allow the downloads, by checking the software key against the registration date.' Peter Norton: 'Well, technically I suppose ... but this is a MORAL issue!' D.A. : 'Well, let's have a look at the morals. Is your software sold with a large red sticker on it that says, 'Only useful for a year - after that you pay us for life'.' Peter Norton: 'Not as such.' D.A. : 'So the person can't make an informed decision at that point?' Peter Norton: 'Um.' D.A. : 'But there remains the question of whether anything has been stolen. Is there any other way to get the signature file updates?' Peter Norton: 'Well, I suppose they could download them manually ... but he's still guilty. Hang 'im!' e_: 'it's an orchestrated litany of lies!!!' Judge: 'Mrs Sharpe - will you please capitalize your sentences! And knock it off with the three exclamation marks.' D.A. : 'Have they stolen any program updates, perhaps?' Peter Norton: 'God no! Do you think we're stupid enough to hand those over beyond the 12 months? Anyway, there hasn't been any development on NAV2000 for ages - in case you haven't noticed it's 2002.' D.A. : 'Yes, quite. Thank you - no more questions.' Judge: 'Is that it? Can we go home now?' D.A. : 'Not quite M'Lud. You see I've always fancied myself a Prosecuting Attourney, and some evidence has come into my possession that someone in this courtroom has been aiding and abetting the 'hacking' of computer software.' Judge: 'Huh?' D.A. 'Well, under a strict interpretation, any change to a program or a program's associated elements that defeats one of the intended functions of that program would be 'hacking' would it not?' Judge: 'I suppose it would.' D.A. : 'Well I have evidence from the F1 Forum archives that a certain person was publicising updates to a utility called 'AdAware', whose purpose it is to prevent the ad serving function of some popluar shareware applications, sometimes rendering the application non-functional in the process. It cuts off the authors' legitimate source of income.' Judge: 'Despicable! Who was it?' D.A. : 'The answer, M'Lud, is all here: www.pcworld.co.nz [break inserted] /1bd611343b1f6816cc25680e001716c9 [break inserted] /7AF4664E157101CECC256B48002A085D!OpenDocument . At this stage I woke up in a cold sweat. Thank goodness it was just a melodramatic bad dream! ;-)
