She starts her computer up and is in the middle of doing something and her monitor just goes blank....sometimes it comes back on straight away only to go blank again and other times she has to turn her computer off. | 33011 | 2002-01-26 23:44:00 | Hi Caro Hopefully someone with more hardware knowledge will answer your post, but in the meantime I've have some suggestions about eliminating possible causes: If you're willing to lend her your gear, you can try: A different power cable with the same screen, the same power cable with your screen, your power cable AND screen, her screen on your system. The idea is to see if faults in the video card or cable can be isolated. Could be that the screen is on its way out (how old?) but it's a hassle to get it checked. On the software side, you could try disabling all the power management features to see they're playing up. You could also try running her system through: http://www.pcpitstop.com/ Really it's a performance measurement rather than a fault finder, but maybe something will pop up. |

| 33013 | 2002-01-27 00:45:00 | Hi, I'm with John, try to isolate the source of thje problem by changing all the bits. If the signal cable is detachable try using a different one. What brand is the monitor/system, Hewlett Packard have some terrible troubles with their systems doing that, but often it will display a self-diagnosis box, saying 'Self-diagnosis; check PC settings correct?' Sounds like it was translated by someone for whom english is a second language, and I never worked out how to fix it, but it normally did it only while using certain apps. Can you force it to happen by running certain programs? Hope that helps, Erin |
