33239 2002-01-28 10:14:00 A security exploit affecting RealPlayer 8 has been bought to the attention of RealNetworks. The exploit known as a buffer overrun, could allow an attacker to run arbitrary code on a user's machine. Here's more detail:
The bug is essentially a parsing error in the player code associated with reading RM files, commonly known as a 'buffer overrun' bug which could theoretically be used by hackers to adversely affect users. The bug was fixed by improving the robustness of file parsing. When RealPlayer encounters files modified in the manner described by this exploit, it will now inform the user that the file is corrupt when played.
Affected Software:
Windows: RealOne Player, RealPlayer 8, RealPlayer 7, RealPlayer G2 (Build # 6.0.6.99 or higher), RealPlayer Intranet 8 & RealPlayer Intranet 7.
Macintosh: RealPlayer 8 & RealPlayer 7.
UNIX: RealOne Player Alpha for Linux 2.2, RealPlayer 8 for UNIX & RealPlayer 7 for UNIX

X-Bit labs has posted the pictures of a Geforce4 that Hexus.net posted a couple of days ago but were forced to remove by nVidia.

Intel it seems, is a bit worried by the AMD hammer CPU that is coming up. The Hammer features the support for x86-64 architecture, which allows for 64bit code. Intel on the other-hand is not offering 64-bit architecture in it's desktop CPU's, choosing to only implement it in the Itanium/McKinley CPUs and these can't handle 32bit code. The Hammer can process 32bit code because it is simply a more advanced version of the XP processor. With all this Intel is developing the Prescott processor to emulate what the Hammer can do. Here's a bit on what a news article said on this catch-up by Intel:Having faced all those problems, Intel decided to create desktop CPUs that would be able to work with bot 32bit and 64bit code. As reported herehttp://www0.mercurycenter.com/business/top/038013.htm, this decision resulted in Yamhill technology, which can be implemented in a new Intel CPU code-named Prescott. Prescott is another 0.09-micron die to be used in Pentium 4 processors due in 2003-2004. They will support Hyper-Threading technology intended for server CPUs alone.
Yamhill, a secret technology hitherto, will help 32bit Pentium 4 CPUs to work with 64bit code like Hammer processors do. Intel hopes that its CPUs will do without Yamhill, because it would be too humiliating for Intel to acknowledge that it takes up the lead of AMD. But if Hammer CPUs are a success, Intel will be forced to enhance Prescott processors with Yamhill. Perhaps, Yamhill will be implemented in Prescott to be enabled only in case of need
