| 33150 | 2002-01-27 22:43:00 | I have a Pentium 3 with 128 Ram 1Gig hard drive, cd writer, windows 98. Ever since I purchased the computer I have had no end of problems. Blue busy screen, constantly freezing, illegal operations when attempting to open programs. some times Illegal operations just appear relating to a program that is not even in use. You name it I have it. I am constantly re formatting but it starts all over again. Have few programs loaded My internet is a constant pain I have Ultra, never able to have a good session on the internet with out rebooting at lest 5 or 6 times. Programs I run are Pagemaker, Word 2000,ICQ Etc. Is it possible to have a dud mother board or harddrive Hope you can help |

Bad memory, however, can cause a lot of problems such as you describe. Even memory that doesn't match the MB or modules of different specs can create problems. Sounds as though there are more issues here than just hardware. It's not possible to get error messages from programs that aren't in use. Some part of the program in question *is* running or attempting to run. Could be a DLL or some portion of the program running in the background. Uninstall that program and see if the symptoms remain. If not, that's the bad seed. I'd be tempted to do a format and install Win98 from scratch, check on its stability, then add your programs one at a time until you find which one (if any) is causing the dramas. BTW, if the clean install of Win98 following a format still shows problems, the chances are very good that your problem(s) will be hardware related. And, get a much bigger HD. :-) |

Check if your heat-sink is connected properly and the fan is not obstructed (by some ribbon-cables for example). Run the system with the casing open, check if the CPU-fan is running (fast enough). If you have one of those big fans in your room for warm days use that as well 2 get fresh air 2 your machine. A chip (especially a modern high-speed one) can do weird things if it gets too hot. Cheers and good luck, Marco |
