33423 2002-01-29 11:21:00 We upgraded the harddrive to a Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm. Most of the software reloaded fine, except for an application that requires installing in MS-DOS mode. The problem is the '\' appears as and '#', which makes it impossible to specify paths.
The key works fine in Windows (98 SE) and at the MS-DOS prompt. Changing the keyboard does not help.
The BIOS may have been inadvertantly changed to the default values.
According to Windows Device Manager and all the diagnostic programmes we can think of, everything is working normally.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

33424 2002-01-29 20:48:00 Shutdown into DOS mode, and type in the following command:

type autoexec.bat

it should display the contents of your autoexec.bat file, which is loaded when your computer starts. Note if there is a line that starts with the word 'prompt', and write down what is contained in that line, and post it back in here. In fact, it may be better for you to write down the whole contents of that file (from DOS, as the same file in Windows is changed when Win98 starts...) and post the whole file contents in here.

It might be the language selected for the keyboard. I know in the UK keyboard, the # is replaced by a pound, so they move the slash as well.

It's the keyboard definition, rather than the keyboard. Have a look in your control panel, keyboard, the language tab. Should be US 101 or similar.

33426 2002-01-30 03:00:00 It might be an option in that application rather than in Windows. But check both.

MS provide a lot of keyboards: later DOS manuals had pages of tables showing them (Manuals -- remember them?).

The worst I ever hit was a mini linux (4 floppies) which loaded the Portugese keyboard.
I had to work from the table to be able to edit the appriate rc file to fix it, because most of the 'punctuation' characters were wrong.
