33433 2002-01-29 10:33:00 I had my heart set on including an optical/cordless mouse in my next system, but some things I've read recently have led me to wonder if this technology is sound.

Would any satisfied users care to defend these devices?

Alternatively, does anyone out there want to tell a cautionary tale?

33434 2002-01-29 11:03:00 Hi John,

My cousin (a victim of a poor computer from the PC Company) has trouble with his optical rodent when he moves it quickly across the screen. Apparently it will jerk a little... But maybe that's just because it's a PC Company one...

Sorry to all those satisfied PC Company customers, but me (and my 11 mates who've had trouble with them) don't think very highly of TPCC anymore...

Just a small hitch though, see what the others say...

:)

33435 2002-01-29 11:12:00 Sorry. Had to do it.

My PC Co optical mouse works just fine. The jerky movement across the screen happens with all opticals apparently. If I remember right, there was an article further down, tweak'es news?, that talks about that.

The jerks don't worry me very much because you have to move it pretty quick to make it happen. I like optics. No balls to clean. Haven't tried cordless yet.

Cheers.

33436 2002-01-29 11:12:00 I have a cordless rodent with one ball. Works mostly pretty well.

Would also be interested in success of cordless without ball.

33438 2002-01-29 11:24:00 Graeme: I'm glad to hear that the jerks don't worry you. I guess that's why you keep coming back to the forum.

Robo: Sorry to hear about your mono-testicular mouse. Hopefully he will be able to lead a normal life, even without a tail and with only one bollock.

33439 2002-01-29 12:59:00 I finally got fed up with my old mouse and went down the optical road...

First attempt was an A4 Tech, what a piece of jerky crap that was (and no my computer isn't a PC Company one :-).

Take 2 was a Kensington and it works like a dream. It is jerky if you try to move it across the screen at 90mph, but then I have never needed to move it that fast.

As for cordless optical I have heard they can suffer lag especially in game play. Also you may need to take shares in eveready due to their thirst for batteries.

33440 2002-01-29 13:05:00 No, I don't have either a cordless nor an optical, but I have been told by people with cordless or cordless-opticals that the batteries die pretty fast in them... especially in the cordless-optical models. Guest (0)
33441 2002-01-29 16:40:00 I have a cordless keyboard and mouse in the office and they work like a charm.

I have never seen a cordless keyboard in NZ, the one in the office here I think is a logitech, readily available here though at about $65-90NZ.

Battery life, I have been using it since the 26th Dec and the batteries were already in them, triple Ax2 for the mouse and I think 4doubleA for the k/b, they are still performing faultlessly

33442 2002-01-29 18:07:00 I have a cordless singular testicular rodent on my personal PC (MS) and I am happy with it. The first one lost it's left click but was replaced under warranty. I did find out however that the replacement only continues the wearranty of the first one, but then that is another issue. As for batteries, intitally it ate them up but since I went on to rechargeable they are lasting well. I already had a charger so apart from the intial battery cost there was no additional outlay.

We have a number of optical tailed rodents at work and they are a problem. No problem with jerks apart from those on staff but find running under ME the pc's lock up to often and have to be rebooted to get them back to life and they do not like working on shiney surfaces we use a sheet of A4.
