33378 2002-01-29 06:55:00 I have been sitting behind a P233mmx for some years now and the time has come for a new P.C.. My question is what should I get. What do you want to use it for and how much can you afford I hear you ask. Apart from the usual, gaming is the main use,I am still stuck with a 56 modem however I enjoy single person playing. I would want to copy CDs and download music onto a CD.About $3200 would be max.so what would be the best bang for the bucks . Guest (0)
33379 2002-01-29 09:03:00 Forget buying its just a waste of capital. I lease my home computer and all of my computers at work.

For about $142.00 per month you can get a whizz bang machine.

33381 2002-01-29 09:40:00 while leasing is a good option for work pc's its not very good for home, expecialy for gaming rigs. would the leasing company want the pc back after you cracked the dvd drive, overclocked everything, and the kids shove bits into it???

two things...look for a ready made gaming rig...a few companies make them or build your own/ get it custom built.

price wise it depends on what you are going to use off the old one eg os, printers etc.

parts roughly......17' monitor minimum, ddr mobo, geforce2 vid minimum, 256 ddr ram, live vaule soundcard , a decent case, 300watt psu, DECENT MOUSE....and o yes a cpu amdXP :)

i can work out a rough price if you have some idea of the parts/brands you want.

33382 2002-01-29 09:46:00 OK..if you want an off the shelf system for gaming.....

Avoid HP or Compaq

Consider the PC Company or Dell, but even better have a talk to a local Computer Shop.

Best of all get a system built to suit your needs and budget.

Get a good case and motherboard as you need to build on a solid base.

Videocard wise accept no less than a GeForce 2 Mx400 but preferably a Geforce 2 Titanium or Geforce 3, ATI 7500 & 8500 are also good.

CD Burner wise Ricoh are good, look for 16x and above.

Soundcard wise soundblaster lives are cheaper now but can be problematic, unfortunately there is not much else to choose from.

Hope this helps, if you see something you like post the specs here and I am sure you will get some usefull feedback.

33383 2002-01-29 10:34:00 I bought my puter 5 months ago now from a company in auckland called PB technolgy.
I got a 40g HD,AMD 1.4ghz processor,512mb ram, cd burner, 17'phillips monitor, printer, speakers, mouse, etc, scanner, Windows ME, norton firewall and AV (3months) and awesome backup for $2500. I spent a month pricing up systems around Auckland and they were the cheapest by far. They are members of the computer manufacturers association so are a safe bet to buy from. Each puter is made for you when you order ( not some mass manufactured clone) and you can specify what you want etc without a problem. Give them a try when pricing up your system.

33384 2002-01-29 10:47:00 I bought this current comp in December from Dragon PC for $2100, with a 7200rpm 40gb hdd, 512 ram, GeForce2 32mb DDR, Flat 17' screen, *really* nice Genius speakers with a subwoofer, an AMD 1.3ghz chip on a really nice motherboard, and Nortons AV and Firewall came for free with the MB. Plus a *really, really* nice black case that everyone I know seems to be wanting to get now, (I think its the cool sliding front cover :)).

But that was a custom built system, and the same PC Company system, eg, would have cost around $3000. Most parts retailers like Dragon or StylesPC don't charge to put systems together, and since support is not going to be a problem for me, the 1 year no-questions asked guarantee + the manufacturer's warantees are good enough for me.

Although, I have to admit, I was too cheap/forgetful to add a modem to the system, so I'm stuck with my old 33.6 :/

33385 2002-01-29 11:11:00 I am not sure where my later posting got to so I apologise if it turns up. Yes tweak'e it would be nice to have the cost as a deductible item. What I was looking at was
Intel Pentium 4 1.6GHz CPU
ATX Tower Case with 300 watt Power Supply
VIA P147 ATA100 4X AGP VIA Chipset Motherboard
40GB ATA100 5400RPM Hard Disk Drive
512MB DDR RAM PC2100 Memory
32MB GeForce 2 MX200 AGP Graphics Card
17' AOC Digital Monitor
3.5' Floppy Drive
Acer 40/20/10 Internal CD Writer
52x CDROM Drive
PCI Sound Card
120 Watt Speakers
PS/2 Multimedia Internet Keyboard
A4 Tech Optical Mouse
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Norton AntiVirus 2002
Is the H.D. speed important and the graphic card would 64mb make a difference, also is that motherboard ok ? I want to get it as right as possible given the money restraints

33386 2002-01-29 12:31:00 Suggestion:

Check out www.thepccompany.co.nz I'm not saying to buy from them, but if you go to their site, you can build a virtual system with parts from a dropdown list and see what the final $'s will be. Then you can chop and change hardware and software to get the price / config right.

Cheers.

33387 2002-01-29 12:35:00 'Yes tweak'e it would be nice to have the cost as a deductible item' hugh?? what the ?? mayby i'm up to late ;-)

go for a geforce2 gts rather than the bottom end mx200. big difference in performance. even if it means dropping the ram to 256 or getting a cheaper cpu.

what pci sound card.....not the usual lame cheapo i hope.

would prefer a 7200rpm harddrive but if money is tight a 5400 will do. just rember its going to be a bit of a bottle neck.

the mouse......well thats comes down to personal preference.
