Well Robo, I have a cordless with ball, thought I would do the test for you, so deballed it, but the damn thing would't do nuffink!

33444 2002-01-29 21:00:00 Using an optical tailed MS mouse at home and at work. Love it to death. No problem from day one. And I use the one at home to play FPS games (which require a sensitive mouse). Systems are 98SE and ME respectively.

If your mouse are jerking across the screen I suggest you check your drivers, I/O and IRQ settings. I've noticed if my computer resources are low my mouse begin to slow down too so I do a reboot.

33445 2002-01-29 21:48:00 Thanks to all for the responses. That's given me some extra things to think about:

a) Consider battery use and associated cost.

b) Surface may be important.

c) Test at speed.

Since a standard mouse is such a small part of the initial cost of a system, I think the best plan would be to take the standard one and then examine the after-market options at my leisure.

33446 2002-01-29 22:20:00 I won my tailed optical mouse from The PC Company (surprisingly, for a feedback form critisicising their site and service :). And I have to say, I do *not* want to go back to a ball mouse. Its a Microsoft optical intellimouse, and its been great for me. I still use a mousepad, partially out of habit, partially for the wrist support its cumfy gel support gives :).

Cordless mice beg the question of necesity. I've heard stories of mouse interference, (nasty at LAN games), where one person would suddenly realise they were controlling another persons machine as well. And you're not going to be THAT far away from a machine to make it unreach with a mouse cord (unless the case is already some distance from the mouse).

Optical - YES (as long as its quality)
Cordless - aah,, I'd think about it first.

33447 2002-01-30 01:15:00 I went to rechargeables really quickly. The minute it plays up I swap the power modules and clean it's bollock.

I have heaps of rechargeables, they mostly work a treat.

33448 2002-01-30 07:52:00 I have used a cordless, optical mouse for some time.
I get about 12 weeks use from a couple of alkaline RECHARGABLE batts.
I have not observed any of the negative problems described by other respondents.[O/S win2000prof.]

I have also fitted about six to some of the computers at work in these cases they are corded optical types with exactly the same success, and intend to install many more as the users are very happy indeed and it means we will be able to forget the onerous tast of cleaning all those mice..

33449 2002-01-30 21:07:00 Have you ever thought about what that gunk is and where it comes from????

Just don't. Icky does not begin to describe it.

33450 2002-01-31 09:32:00 A mate of mine got the Micro$oft Intelli explora, and after using it I wanted one, but not at the price.

I got a Maxxtro 5 button optical. It has worked just as well, but was only $49.99.

When I first got it, I used on the straight desk, with mixed results, now I have my (very) old 3M precise mouse pad under it. This pad resists dirt better than the $2 Warehouse ones, plus it is dark.

A couple of mates also went and got the Maxxtro, and seem pretty happy. Only drawback, was PS2 only, but the shop had adapters for a couple of bucks.

33451 2002-02-01 01:25:00 Hi,

Have PCCo Comp and A4Tech 5-button optical tailed. Oarsome!! USB or PS2, works - no jerk detectable unles I try to make it happen (even then it took a few tries)

Works on any surface, even the leg of my pants. The cord is long enough that I can bareley see my 17' monitor at its furthest reach.

Was also one of the cheapest and most recommended by the friendly staff at DSE.

The 5-button programmability is great for CAD packages I use regularly as I can program zoom, pan, rotate and other frequently used commands.

Would never go back to my sluggish balled mouse.
