33538 2002-01-30 07:44:00 I am mystified why my 'old girl', a 486 with Win95 and 2x cd-rom drive, can't/won't read the CD-R disk that I made on the younger machine with the cd writer.

I thought it was only the CD-RW disks that old cd-rom drives refused to play with.

Would anyone like to explain?

Thanks!!

33539 2002-01-30 08:26:00 Hi Susan,

Let me clarify one importanmt factor in your problems before you start:

Are you quite sure your computer is female?

If so, then perhaps you should try re-burning the disk, and/or using a different brand of Disk. I have known many old CDROM Drives (around the 8-12X mark) to have endless problems with copied CD's. It seems that a newer drive, or a different type of disk is required...

Oh, and something else, is the disk a 700MB version? If so I'd say it's a darn site too modern for your PC, and you should downgrade to 650's

If of course your computer is not female, then I'm lost as to what to do, as I'm sure it won't spill it's emotions on you...

Hope that helps

:)

33540 2002-01-30 08:33:00 Older CD-ROM drives can have problems with both CDR and CDRW. I remember Orac saying once that burning the CDRs at a slower speed may help. I think it must be that the longer that it takes to burn, the better burned it is.

33542 2002-01-30 09:37:00 Hi Susan,

Here's another suggestion to try. Make sure you have closed the disc after writting your session, some CD-ROMs (especially the older ones) have difficulty reading CD's that have not been 'closed'.

33543 2002-01-30 09:58:00 Tristan, do CD-R disks need to be 'closed'? I thought it was only the CD-RW ones?

If that is the case then how do I 'close' it? I used Nero to copy a big bunch of files straight from my hard drive to the CD-R disk in one session.
