33406 2002-01-29 09:41:00 Ater loading a trial version of McAfee Anti virus software from a PCWorld CD, and having trouble getting uptodate virus definitions,I uninstalled it. Ever since start up has been interrupted by an error message to the effect that whilst the AV software was uninstalled, an associated application called 'Safe & Sound' had not been, and this was causing a conflict. The message comes up in DOS. I've tried deleting (the S & S program doesn't appear in add/remove programs), with no effect.
The S&S program appears in My Computer as a System Folder.
Start up is a big enough pain without this (it requires another key stroke and a 30 - 40 second wait). Advice on getting rid of this 'hangover' would be appreciated.
System is a PII 350 with W98

33407 2002-01-30 00:09:00 Hi John

Yeah Mcafee is a pain to uninstall. Go to this web site www.mcafeehelp.com On the left you will see 'choose a product', from there you can find out how to manually uninstall Mcafee. Look for uninstaller 6+ or whatever verison you are running. It a long winded process but it should work. Hope this helps.

33408 2002-01-30 10:05:00 If this program 'Safe & Sound' is trying to load when you boot up, you can disable it by going in to the 'system configuration untility'. You do this by typing in 'msconfig' at the run prompt. Under the start up tab, it shows all the programs that loads with windows. Look for anything that resembles your problem program and take the tick out of the box to stop it from trying to load. Only untick programs that you're sure on as some are essential to windows. If it's not there check under the config.sys or autoexec.bat tab.
Suggest also get a copy of 'Regcleaner' (a much better registry cleaner than the Microsoft version 'Regclean') from:

www.jv16.org

This should clean up any links to programs no longer installed on your PC

33409 2002-02-05 02:55:00 Thanks, that did the trick. The Mcafeehelp instructions were very clear, rather well done I thought. Guest (0)
33410 2002-02-05 03:03:00 Thanks. There was a leftover under the startup tab but removing that wasn't enough. A manual uninstal guide was available from mcafeehelp.com that eventually did the trick. Guest (0)
