33714 2002-01-31 08:10:00 How do I go about deleting or emptying index.dat in xp pro. Guest (0)
33715 2002-01-31 08:35:00 Something to hide huh?

Anyway if you go into a command prompt. Typing cmd at Run.

Assuming your dos skills are still with you, you delete it from there. Maybe making a batch file will make it easier.

I am not sure this works but it may.

33716 2002-01-31 08:40:00 OK it didn't work but if you could somehow do it while it's not being used. Maybe making that batch file run before Windows loads might be an idea. I am sure there's a simpler ways to do it. Guest (0)
33717 2002-01-31 10:26:00 There are a number of programs available that will do this for you but I got picky and wrote a universal batch file that will elimiate all index.dat files on W95/98/2k. It is on a floppy boot disk and runs from autoexec.bat. I insert at switch on, let it do its work the eject the floppy and do a reboot back to windows.

It's a bit crude at present but I think I could make it more elegant and less complex if I had some spare spare time.

Of course, a DOS boot disk won't work if your HDD is formatted NTFS as DOS can't read NTFS partitions, so the program route would have to be followed.

Cheers

33718 2002-01-31 21:18:00 If XP is anything like 2000 there are a lot more than one index.dat hidden on the system. I have actually found a way to stop the things growing at all from the default 16kb and 32kb sizes. I turned them all into read-only files! Means you can't save passwords in Win IE for autoinsertion but hey my index.dats which used to grow pretty big at times have not grown at all since. Guest (0)
33719 2002-10-12 18:10:00 OK, this sounds like a good way to 'delete' these files. Would you mind telling me where they are, or how to find them?
A straight search for index.dat in WinXPpro's "Command Prompt" naturally turns up nothing. Is there a way of entering a "real DOS" (or equivalent of DOS) mode that WILL allow you to see and modify all copies of index.dat?

33720 2002-10-12 20:19:00 index.dat was supposed to be a bug of Internet Explorer prior to version 6 and that it was supposed to have been fixed by version 6.

However, Microsoft have been known for their devious ways so I wouldn't take that for gospel. Unfortunately I know of no way to find and/or delete any index.dat files that may be in Win XP.

I saw your other post regarding your privacy and the only advice I can give is to keep searching for privacy programs for Win XP if you use Internet Explorer. Also, you might want to research whether other browsers like Mozilla and Opera store those kinds of files - I think I read that Opera doesn't but it appears to work closely with IE for certain pages so don't quote me on that.

Better yet, learn, install and use Linux. ;-)
