33657 2002-01-31 01:56:00 You know how everyone with Win98SE has trouble shutting down the PC, when it just hangs on the 'Windows is now shutting down' (or whatever the message is)?

Our work PC does that and last week the monitor suddenly produced a yellow background instead of white. Rebooting changed nothing, then over a few days it did it again before becoming normal a few hours later. No pattern to the occurences.

Yesterday the boss swapped the monitor (15') for another one (17') and the really strange thing is that since the swap the PC no longer has problems shutting down.

Can anyone explain this? Could the video card be on the blink? The replacement monitor apparently also acted a bit strange a couple of times, but not as much as the original one.

Can the shutdown problem be related to the monitor problem at all?

This is a big mystery and there is much more to this story but I don't want to bore anyone to tears unnecessarily.

Any suggestions welcome.

33658 2002-01-31 02:02:00 I have no idea, Susan, but I'll take a guess. The new monitor perhaps uses a different driver, perhaps written a little better, than the old monitor, so Windows finds it easier to shut down, as the driver is working slightly better.

That's my guess anyway

Mike.

33660 2002-01-31 04:14:00 I don't want to ask the obvious but anyway, has this PC had a windows update, I know a lot of people neglect this.

I only get a bad shutdown after I have stressed it out with too many resource hungry programs; that's once in a blue moon; probably more to do with luck than good management although I run & try a lot of different programs.

33662 2002-01-31 08:17:00 Hi Susan

Yes, much better thanks, my therapist says I should be cured in, oh, 20 years or so.

On to your yellow screen problem, monitors are essentially just a TV set without the channel selection and colour decoding circuits, and they produce white by mixing the three primary colours which are red green and blue. Yellow is a mix of blue and green (this is additive mixing of light Susan, not subtractive as in pigments so forget your old colour mixing tecniques from Kindy).

A yellow screen means that there is no red present and this can be due to four basic causes: 1) the CRT (tube)is internally faulty and the red gun drops out intermittently; 2) the red drive circuitry in the monitor electronics is intermittent; 3) the monitor plug is not making proper contact, and 4) the video card is intermittently dropping its red output.

Don't reformat solely on account of this fault because that won't cure a primary colour problem.

The best diagnostic technique is to swap the monior with that of another computer and see if the problem goes with it, then move on to the video card if necessary. My bet is that it will be the monitor, but given the brain-fogging effects of my present disorder I might be wrong!

As for the shutdown issue, I can't really see why a monitor would influence shutdown shutdown unless there was a corrupted driver problem. I have swapped monitors freely between computers for years and they all seem to work OK for basic purposes. Only occasionally have I had to think about drivers when I wanted to access some special feature or other.

I guess there's no point in asking if you've done the 'fast shutdown' thing and checked or removed the shutdown sound file?

33663 2002-02-01 08:15:00 Hi Susan

Brain fade struck again! I was in such a hurry to answer your monitor problem that I got my colours mixed. It doesn't make any difference to the possible causes, but the missing colour is actually blue. In additive mixing the basic colour palette is:

Red + Green = Yellow

Red + Blue = Magenta

Blue + Green = Cyan

R + B + G = White, so loss of blue gives a yellow screen.

Did you fix your shutdown problem yet?

33665 2002-02-01 09:24:00 Hi Billy,

You must be still in holiday mode LOL.

Thanks for the correction - I might have to educate someone else someday so the facts are important, eh.

I didn't work today so I have to wait until Monday to check out the shutdown thing, and to find out if the monitors are behaving or not. I'll keep you posted whatever happens.

33666 2002-02-01 10:57:00 Thanks for that Steve, I've taken note of it ready for next week.

Very interested to hear of the video card relationship, might have something to do with our problems.
