i have a USrobotics Courier V Everything and for some reason it won't work the modem was own by my uncle and he lost the cable to connect it to the PC so he brought a serial/paralell cable from the warehouse i think this could be the prob the error message is
'The modem is not responding properly. Please verify that the modem is plugged in to the computer and to the telephone line.
If the problem persists, please select 'Help' button to start the Windows Modem Troubleshooter'

anyone got any ideas i have no real idea about serial ports etc so it could just be setup wrong

thanx

33964 2002-02-02 01:11:00 You didn't say what operating system. But most likely it can't find the serial port, which means the modem is not installed properly yet.

Check in device manager, and see if there is a serial port, or two installed.

If there are none, then turn them on in your bios, and reboot.

If they are there, then try add remove hardware, and let windows search for new hardware, this will look for and install the serial port for the modem, and install the modem or ask for the drivers if you have not done so yet.

There are more things to try, but start with these and come back if you have no luck.

33965 2002-02-02 01:20:00 First of all what Operating System do you have?

Did it detect the modem and install it itself or did you do it?

I'll throw out a bunch of random guesses but if the modem wasn't detected and you installed it you may have not known which COM port it was connected on. I think externals are usually COM2 but you still have to check that it's getting a signal.

The cable could be at fault. You say serial/parallel. I know how places like warehouse name them whatever but parallel and serial are different. Serial usually have a 9Pin DB female and male connector and you can sometimes see a 25Pin DB female connector on it aswell which also is a serial connector. I know you would probably have the right cable because parallel cables won't fit into that modem.

Apart from that you can try things by seeing if the modem is turn on, plugged into the phone line maybe test it out on another computer to check if that modem still works.

33966 2002-02-02 02:25:00 thanx for that Kame Krazee op= windows me

windows did actually detect it and installed the drivers for the modem then i get the above error message.

'Serial usually have a 9Pin DB female and male connector and you can sometimes see a 25Pin DB female connector on it aswell which also is a serial connector'

that sound like my cable but it only has one of the small serial connectors plus two of the 25 pin connectors(one at each end plus one end has the small connector) I have tryed downloading the latest drivers which are the same as the windows drivers and they don't make any difference

thanx for the help
