33945 2002-02-01 23:16:00 Hi Y'All

A few posts back someone (Tazzie?) made a comment about building 'on a solid base' when deciding on PC components.

That seems like good advice to me, so I've decided to take my hardware questions right back to basics.

What should I look for in a computer case?

What are the pitfalls?

Any brands stand out? Any to avoid?

Is there any preferable placement or orientation for the rails or jigs (or whatever you call them) inside the box?

33946 2002-02-02 03:43:00 Hi John,

I'm impressed with my husband's new tower case. It has removable panels for 5 CD drives and two 3 1/2' floppy drives (or equivalent). The rack behind it has slots for all of the above and a hard drive. He'll never use them all of course, but it is impressive!

My older tower case has a built in floppy slot and two large removable slots - one of which contains a zip drive and the other a CD writer. If I'd had space I could have kept the CD ROM instead of replacing it. There's no room for more external additions - if we do think of something I'll have to use it through the network.

These days I'd definitely aim for the bigger box.

Bought it through www.vivid-computers.co.nz (local and friends for years)

33947 2002-02-02 03:48:00 Correction. 4 (not 5) 5 1/4' bays. I can't count! It also looks cute with a green curvy panel on it. Guest (0)
33948 2002-02-02 04:56:00 I would definately go fo ANY of the iCute cases (if you can find them), they have speces in the front for 4 Fans, 2 fans at the back, and the HDD bays go to the bottom (means you can add 4 HDD) as well as 2 3.5' bays it also has 4 5.25'. ALso comes with a beefy 320W PPack with 2 fans. The PPack is P4 ready (Although I use it for my Athlon). Also has 2 x USB ports in front. Its the only case I seen that lets you put 6 Additional fans in without modding. And if you are looking at overclockig, or just want a ROCK solid stable system, then go for it! Guest (0)
33949 2002-02-02 07:04:00 well a couple of pitfalls are-

not haveing a big enough air inlet. pointless putting 6 fans in if the airintake won't flow that amount of air.

thin metal, bad design means lots of rattles and vibrations. seen a few washing machines 'walk' and a few pc's to ;-)

i love front mounted usb ports no more fiddling around the back to plug the camara in.

33951 2002-02-03 03:09:00 Thanks to all who contributed.

My summary of what I've learned is:

1.Check that there are plenty of slots and bays.

2.Check out www.vivid-computers.co.nz

3.Heather is impressed by her husband's 'tower'. (Really, I'm not sure I wanted to know that.)

4.iCute may be a good choice

5.Check for plenty of case fans and an air intake big enough to feed them.

6.USB ports in front is good.

7.HDD bays at bottom. (Not sure I understand this one).

8.Consider the power pack spec (more research required).

9.Round IDE cables (I didn't know there was such a thing) keep the case internals tidy.

10.Watch out for solid construction.

33952 2002-02-03 05:38:00 His tower is fantastic! But now, back to the subject in hand...

I've been tinkering with the network today. Took the old syquest drive out of the dead 386 and added it to the tower. I love the space inside it. Slotted it in and connected it no problems.

Attention then turned to the old 486. I'm about to find an old sound card to wedge in to the spare slot - hopefully without grazing knuckles and snagging wires.

Big is best.

How many fans do people PUT in computers? Why? To cook turkeys?
