34026 2002-02-02 09:55:00 Hello,

I have a 450Mhz PIII PC with 2 hard drives and 512Ram.
One hard drive is 40GB 5,400rpm (With 98,2000 + other partitions) and the other is a 13Gb, 7,200rpm (backup) with 3.33Gb space left.

Question is, what settings should I use for my virtual memory size on Win2000 with my 512 ram?

Does windows 2000 do a good job? or can you recommend a good setting with all my specs?

The size which 2000 has allocated for me is:
*Inital Size: 768
*Maximum size: 1536
*Space Available: 7545

total paging file size for all drives

minimum allowed: 2mb
Recommend: 766mb
Currently allocated: 768mb

Does this mean anything?

Thdx ;_))

34027 2002-02-02 10:08:00 I know I have overkill Virtual Memory so my advice might not be that great.

Anyway it's better to have your paging file on a seperate drive. If not, a seperate partition will do as it keeps the system and program files from getting fragemented much.

Also if you have a seperate drive or partition formatting it in FAT32 gives it better performance if using it solely as a swap file.

I was told that having the swap file max should be 2 1/2 the amount of RAM you have so 1.2 GB. The minimun should be at least 1/3 to 1/2 your RAM so around 256 somewhere.

I was Krazee when I did mine and maxed out the most swap file I could get which was 4095MBx2 as I use both of them for Win2k and XP. But if I ever want to use part of that drive I know where I can free some space up.

34028 2002-02-02 10:55:00 Hi,

Once I have done this, will I expect anything new othr than it keeping all my programs less fragmented so quickly?

Is this a good thing?

34029 2002-02-02 12:07:00 For Win 9x systems usually anywhere up to 256mb of virtual memory is sufficient for systems with less than 128mb RAM. The MORE Ram you have the LESS virtual memory you need. 256mb of RAM should require at MOST 128mb virtual, if any at all.

Win 2000 systems I guess would require slightly more, but with your 512mb RAM you probably still don't need any virtual memory, perhaps only at most 128mb.

2 1/2 times RAM doesn't make any sense, because virtual memory is used when there's not enough RAM, so if you've got 16mb RAM, using the 2 1/2 times theory you'd have 40mb virtual... whereas if you have 512mb RAM you'd have 1280mb virtual memory... Should be the LESS Ram you have, the MORE virtual you have.

34030 2002-02-02 12:09:00 If you set your virtual memory to a fixed size (max and min the same) you'll find your drive will get less fragmented as the swap file isn't growing and shrinking all the time. With 512mb RAM you should be able to set a fixed size no problem, as you probably won't ever need it. Guest (0)
34031 2002-02-02 13:29:00 Hi Clau.

Like Mike said: With that much ram, you will probably find that your virtual memory wont be needed.

I only have 256mb ram, virtual memory set @ 256 min and 11000 max, (11000 being free space.) When I run system moniter, I find I'm not using any virtual memory no matter what I'm doing. Its all done on the ram.

So I wouldn't worry too much what you have it set on.

Cheers.

34032 2002-02-03 00:03:00 Hi,

Thanks for the interesting concept(s) issues put forward.

This addresses an area of somewhat confusion.

Now theres some light to shed my understanding.

Any input is appreciated. If theres more info u can disperse at your disposal, cool!!!

34033 2002-02-03 06:40:00 There is so much disinformation on this page I had to post. Anyone who puts their pagefile onto a different partition on the same disk as the OS, thinking it will perform better is a moron. If you don't have a separate hard disk leave your pagefile on the system partition. The best bet is to change the min and max pagefile size to be the same on the first boot. You will then get a contiguous pagefile that wont resize and get fragmented. Page file should be physical memory x 1.5 nowadays. Guest (0)
34034 2002-02-03 07:29:00 Everything I have read, says leave it alone in W2k.

The default is already 1.5x

34035 2002-02-03 09:01:00 The separate partition helps with less fragmentation doesn't improve the speed as having it on a separate drive. Guest (0)
