| 34181 | 2002-02-03 13:00:00 | How easy is it to replace a BIOS chip given one is available? Are there any companies around that can fit them? Has anyone tried to do it themselves and if so did it work? Thanks. |

It is definitely easier with the mother board removed, it gives you more room to get at the chip. You can use an IC extraction tool, but I prefer to use a screw driver blade with a twisting action, to carefully inch out each end a bit at at a time. You should take antistatic precautions. The above refers to the DIP chip, there is also a PLCC chip which fits into a square socket. Usually unless you are experimenting, the only time really you need to change a BIOS chip is if it has gone bung, or a virus has got into it so it doesnt work. Its not something to play with unless you are into that sort of thing. Cheers |

Yopu need a proper (special)soldering iron to remove the old one, and skill to place and solder the new one. If it's a DIL plugin, a small screwdriver is best, as Terry said; PLCC leadless carriers need the pulling tool -- a shop with the chip would have the tool. But why -- and can you get the exact BIOS for your motherboard? |
