34320 2002-02-04 10:00:00 Well this week made me think... there really is some merits in an off the shelf computer. Those off us that build our own rant on about the merits and quality. Yeah well...not with the week I have had.

1) Installed a new CD-Writer, caching errors. Try it in another computer, same thing get a replacement, same thing. Get a different brand.

Problem Solved

2) New GF2 Titanium Video card, all is good for a few days. Then it all went to hell and back with it, tried it in another computer all was fine. Thought it may be a prob with my VIA chipset or my onboard Firewire ports as the other comp I tried it on was an Intel 815 chipset. Ordered in a new intel based board, tried it on a friends computer running an 815 identical to the one I ordered in. Damn it all went to hell with that one as well. Maybe it's a driver issue, tried all the different drivers available with no luck.

So it must be the video card right??? Don't have the problem with my old GF2!!

Oh well a replacement card is on the way. Hope that fixes the problem!!

At least the ADSL went on without a hitch :-)

But it makes you think, had it have been an 'off the shelf'.......

I could have just put it in a box, sent it back with a note... MAKE IT WORK!!!

It's amazing how many hours can be spent trying to pinpoint the cause of a problem.....sometimes it's a case of it could be this or it could be that.

When I built my first pc last month - I learnt a LOT....

34322 2002-02-04 10:43:00 whats the prob with the vid card and what brand is it??

a lot of people think that building a pc is just buy parts plug them in and it works. they tend to forget about the research/testing that you do to check if their is any know imcompatibilities betweeen parts/software.

34323 2002-02-04 11:01:00 Having gone both ways, Id probably have to say with the next computer Id most likely go with an off the shelf system. Sure it costs more, but the hassles of getting it working are on someone elses shoulders.

If someone ever tells you that building your own computer is easy and youll have no problems, lies... there will ALWAYS be something, no matter how small that doesnt work first time.

34324 2002-02-04 11:04:00 The card was a Leadtek Winfast GF2 Titanium, was upgrading from a MX400 SH Pro Leadtek as well...I mean how bad could it have gone :-) and trust me, I put a lot of research into the parts I buy. All reputable brands, I think sometimes the evil little pixies running around inside computers get bored and decide to have some fun.

I have built many computers for people without too many probs, just think I had one of those weeks!!
