34277 2002-02-04 06:43:00 My friend has just got Win XP, which I've never seen, and asked if I can help. My problem is that I've only used Win 9.x and NT so don't know how to guide her.

She says: 'i was trying to play some music on the windows media player i have always been able
to do this but this time i couldnt and a message was displayed saying that 'cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is
available, or the hardware is not responding. I went onto help and it said i didnt have a sound card installed on my computer???!!!
Do you know what this means and can you help me???'

I'm not sure if XP has System Properties, so I'm unable to tell what's happened there, or how to explain how to reinstall the sound card drivers.

34278 2002-02-04 07:06:00 XP should provide compatability info about the items being configured at 'Install' time.
Quite a few sound cards have yet to be approved for Windows XP.
Until this happens, XP may not recognise the product.

34279 2002-02-04 08:05:00 It may be an older card that XP just doesn't like. Something to try would be maybe installing it using the NT Drivers. Also find out who the manufacturer of the card was and check their site for updates.

Hope this helps.

34280 2002-02-04 08:17:00 Thanks for the comments - but just a reminder from my first post... 'i have always been able to do this but this time i couldnt'.

In other words it used to work on her XP system, but now it can't, which is why I've asked for the specifics on how XP operates vs NT and Win9.x

34281 2002-02-06 05:45:00 I'm a Win 98 user who has been helping a new user with XP. When she bought the computer it turned up minus a USB lead. (She has a USB scanner and a USB printer).

The lead arrived and I went over to plug in the scanner. The scanner didn't work. I immediately went to Control Panel and found a 'helpful interface' which showed no scanner installed.

A phone call solved the problem. There's a link marked 'classic ...' (can't remember the words). Clicking this shows all the options in the old style format.

Things are still there - if you can find your way past the 'friendly' interface!
